I am getting Mod50 .It hasn't arrived yet so I am not sure of the ohms output yet . But what would be the best hotplate to get ? I want to use it for a couple of options : I want to obviously be able to place it between my the Mod50 and the cab . But also want to be able to go out of the hotplate into an efects unit if I so desire . I am assuming the out put will be switchable between 4 , 8, and 16 ohms . So which THD hotplate would be the best option ? My Marshall can is also 4 16 and 8 . 8 I believe is stereo

Hey Llewzaher,

Congrats on the MOD50, You'll love it. The Ohm output is switchable between 4,8, or 16 Ohms.

IMO, the MOD50 sounds great at low/bedroom levels and even better when cranked i don't think you would
get much benefit from the Hotplate. You can run the amps Master hot and turn the modules down for a similar effect.
I guess there could level issues with the loop doing that but i have never had an issue.

The loops sound great too...better than loading down the head and using the line out of the THD as i find it's
not very transparant past the -8db setting maybe even -4db. The hotplate is useful for a W/D/W application though w/no attenuation.

I'm actually selling my 8 Ohm hotplate because since getting the MOD50 i never use it.

Thanks for the response .. I am not too sure what W/D/W is ....The reason I was looking at it was because I wanted for church and wanted to crank up the tubes with good volume levels .( not blowing everyoen away :} I was also thinking if I decided at 1 point to have a stereo set up I could go out of the Mod 50 into Hot plate into effects into mesa pwr amp to speakers ..

But I wasn't aware the modules allow you to crank it up like that and still keep the overall volume low

Congrats on the amp. Short story is .. you will not need it. I suggest you get the amp, try it and then if you still feel the Hot Plate is necessary buy one. Not only does the MOD 50 have the best master volume on the market but there is also a dual wattage feature as well. Just switch the power switch to LOW and you will be running at about 25 watts. You will be perfectly happy with the sound ... we promise

Definitely try without the Hotplate first. FYI, the low power setting on the Standby switch is actually about 10 watts (not 25). The MOD50 already a line out you can use for the effects send so you won't need the Hotplate for that.

I found my hotplate totally unnecessary for my MOD50s....it has a great MV and the low power mode is fantastic.

Ok well looks unanimous from everyone . Thanks alot for everyone's input and avice . I will wait try the amp first . I wanted to order and have it all here at once . But will wait on this .

thanks guys

I echo what's been said, at least play it first, I use mine at bed room levels all the time and love it. Obviously it sounds better louder, but it's not like other amps that are only useable at ear bleeding levels. That's one of my favorite parts about this amp, I can use it all the time, not just in a live setting.

Like everybody else, i sold my hotplate when i bought my Mod 50 too.

It just sounds so good!

As a recidivist Egnater studio user, I find the sweet spot for my favorite classic tones are almost always in low (10w) mode with master only at 11:30 or so. There, it has a great balance of saturation and clarity, and you still have some leeway with the preamp levels too -- which is very nice. For more modern tones, I merely kick it over to full power and pull the volume down to about 10:30. Keep in mind, this is in a studio setting where I can run it as loud as I want, but this very often gets me to the best recorded tones IMO.

I'm always suspicious about the hype I hear about stuff until I hear it in person, but I am very curious about checking about my friend's Faustine Phantom load box coupled to his amp in a few days. Although I personally have no need for one, I am interested to know if this thing lives up to the reviews, as I have never found a load device that didn't suck tone with volume.

FWIW, I've used my MOD50 in low power mode, both with a Hot Plate (at -4dB, just to take some edge off the volume when others are nearby) and without.

I'm a huge fan of the Hot Plate, and I agree that when it's used at -4dB or -8dB with the hi/low switches on, it's completely transparent and a wonderful tool. Like any amp, if you squash it to death with any attenuator, you're bound to loose something.

I also agree that the Egnater can be effectively played without one, it's not necessary. But if you do need/want an attenuator, you can be confident in the Hot Plate not sucking tone when used judiciously. (and I've used numerous attenuators)
