the best unit to get a vintage reverb sound on my MOD 50?

I've been using the Electro Harmonix Holy Grail for a long time now and I think it works great. It has a very nice spring reverb and I would compare it to what you hear from the vintage Fender Twins. Go to your local dealer and check one out.

If you can find one, the TubeWorks Real Tube Reverb is the s--- ... two channels, two separate tanks, all tube circuit in a one-space unit ... sounds amazing. I have one in my rack. They are rare and pricey as hell.

The Peavey Valverb is also very good, all tube, very warm and vintage sounding. Also has tremolo, which is nice. Probably the best thing Peavey ever made, and I don't know why they stopped.

The Holy Grail sounds decent, but they are noisy as hell, I had to return three before I got one that had an acceptable level of hiss. The Real Tube and the Valverb are both very quiet through my rack system, which is pretty high-fidelity, and uses an M4 preamp.

Yeah I want a Valverb pretty bad. There was one up here for $175 not too long ago. That's a friggin steal for one of those. I like what I've heard of the Tube Works. I guess the preamp is SS but it still sounds great. It's around the same price as the Valverb. Pretty much dead heat between these two.

Another unit that I'm intrigued by is the Demeter RV-1. The RVB-1 too for that matter. I don't know it's worth the $800 price tag though.

Yet another look would be the Guyatone FR-3000V. More moderately priced but bulky. It would clash with the Mod 50 color scheme.

If none of the above is doing it for you, you could also consider the T-Rex Roommate. It's around the same price as the Tube Works and Valverb.

I'm getting a reverb unit eventually and have spent months searching and contemplating. I have it narrowed down to a Valverb, Tube Works, and Lexicon Mx300. The latter perhaps replacing the Line 6 blob.

Soldano Surf and Space box are supposed to be amazing. But the Space Box is like $600 and the Surf Box is way more on the used market as it has some of that legendary status associated with it.

I never tried a Holy Grail in the Mod 50, but I recall it was noisy for me with other amps as well. Can the Holy Grail handle the hot loop?

I think the Real Tube Reverb is all tube, there are two 12AX7's in there.

The biggest difference between the Real Tube Reverb and the Valverb is both have gain and tone controls to help shape the reverb's sound; on the Valverb, the tone controls effect only the sound of the reverb itself which is pretty subtle, on the Real Tube Reverb, it affects your guitar's sound as well. This is much more effective for shaping the reverb sound when you are running the Real Tube 100% wet in an effects loop, which is how I use it with the M4.

But the Valverb's tremolo is nice to have, too. Be careful of a used Valverb because some of them have problems with a volume drop using the tremolo, and spring crashing when you rack mount them, there's some mods to help both cases.

I liked both units, but give the edge to the Real Tube because of the second channel, you can string the two together for a really deep reverb, or use and set them independently of each other, which has interesting possibilities for guitarists as well.

A Real Tube Reverb went for more than $800 on eBay a couple months back, and I've seen Valverbs approach $300. $175 for a Valverb is a steal, assuming it works correctly. I picked up my Real Tube Reverb for $350 and was happy to pay it. I keep the Holy Grail as a backup.

The reason the Real Tube Reverb is the has the most lush sound reverb is because it has two 6 spring reverb tanks, plus you can run them in series.

I got my Mod 50 with the reverb option. It runs in the parallel loop. Sounds very nice and lush. Most of the time however, I want a more modern reverb sound and go with digital.

Echoing what Muudrock said...

I typically don't like spring reverb units and have always gone digital. That said, I ordered the factory reverb with my Mod 50 and I LOVE it! It's very dynamic and not all all "springy". Like Muud said, it uses the parallel loop which may be an issue for some.

I now use only digital delay, and rely on the stock reverb... give it a listen if you can.

Does it have 2 or 4? If I'm reading right it says 4. I hope this doesn't make me sound like the forum dick (Guitardo), but I am seriously interested to know which is the case. If the answer is indeed 4 does it put off a bunch of heat?

It has a pair of 12AX7's ... I opened mine up recently. Two stages for each tube, I would surmise.

It does not put off significant heat in the rack. Mine is 14 years old and has the original tubes in it and they are fine. The external power supply gets hot as hell, though. I ordered a NOS second supply, thinking there was something wrong with it, but it got just as hot as the first one did.
