The first XTC I played was one of the first 101b models with the white chassis. Had it on loan from a shop and it sounded amazing. Not sure why the white chassis amps get such a bad rap. I thought the one I played had tons of tone!
That was started by a guy who goes by the name "squarehead". He went to TGP and posted a warning that people "should not buy the 101B cab-switching head". I have both the 100B and an early 101B with cab-switching. It's every bit as good as my 100B if not better because of the cab switching option. Maybe there was one on ebay that he wanted?
Here's an email exchange between myself and Jorg at Bogner...
My question:
"I was also curious to the "tone suck" comments on TGP in reference to the early 101 model Ecstasy amplifiers. I have a 100B and a 101B with the cab switching/attenuator loop options. It's one of the best sounding amplifiers I've ever owned, and sounds just as good (maybe even better) than my 100B. I'm just a bit confused as to what these people are referring to?
Jorg:
"The cab switching is done with relays so the audio signal goes over the relays which migth or might not suck tone. Neclegtable in my opinion. These are VERY expensive huge relays. It's just something for people to talk about... I would not worry about it."
I also spoke with Charlie at Bogner who said; "comparing a 100B to a 101B cab switcher is splitting hairs at best..."
Sounds to me like Bogner wanted to keep costs as low as possible by streamlining the overall design maybe? As far as Squarehead's "tone suck" comments are concerned, he must have played a 101B that had something wrong with it. If he played one at all?
