The forgotten half of Racer X

I love that Bruce always kept that 80’s vibe in his playing even today - he’s just good at the phrasing that’s iconic to metal. Paul is amazing but definitely dove more into fusion playing or just phrasing that differed as time has gone on.

Both sound amazing and could play me under a table. They both make it look easy.

Bruce is one of the only famous guitar players who holds his pick (trailing edge, upward pickslant) like I do

You can always tell how much harder we hit than the yngwie DWPS guys

For more Bruce material, check out 'The Scream'....1 album, self titled. Some great stuff on it. The singer, John Corabi, was Crue's singer on the ill fated 94 album......Juan Alderete also, from RacerX.....

The Order Of Control was his last solo album that came out in 2013 and worth checking out..

I'm sure most know, he was a student of Paul's at GIT. Paul was also a private tudor and spent a lot of time with Bruce, and as he progressed so fast, Paul ask him to join Racer X.

Bruce is a combination of natural talent, and a good teacher.

Dan. Does your right thumb joint allow you to hold the pick like Bruce does. Mine can. And I’ve tried to do that trailing edge attack. Maybe I’m just not patient enough. I’m an upward pick slanter with leading edge. Always thought my technique might be better if I used the trailing edge though.

I'm a roller... Edge to corners depending on rhythm or lead, and corners especially if I want a harmonic/squeal to pop with more thumb.

Saw him live with Paul during the G3 tour in Orlando. Amazing dude and didn't miss a single beat live. The Racer X albums are still filled with scary guitar licks to this day. Master class in harmonized shred right up there with Cacophony.

It's not better or worse, just different

And some things are harder and some easier

IF you've been doing leading edge for this long I don't think it would be wise to change it unless you don't have a ton of time invested in woodshedding lead speed

Oddly. Being an upward slant picker. I use trailing edge from 6–>1 (strings). Very simple to me…. Downward slant is odd for me. I guess my hand sux. But I use leading edge there. If I do Zack pents on 2 strings like no more tears I am a downward picker leading edge. My mind is too slow to decipher where I’m at when playing as crossing strings Up down. wtf. Idk. It works. Most of the time.

Everyone has to switch some things, some times - it's just a matter of what you start out with as your "default"

I stay UWPS when i do the two string pentatonics ala Zakk

I have to switch to DWPS when doing ascending "volcano" yngwie style licks, and it is awkward but ive practiced it by doing those licks over and over

But I never change edges, i'm always trailing edge

There is no perfect theory of everything, its just about finding mechanical solutions to the mechanical problem of changing strings at speed relative to what your default is

And no one can decipher it in real time dude that's why you record video of yourself LOL

"...My Heaaaaart....a Heart of a Lion...!!"

In my top 5 tunes of all time, and the opening B chord is used everytime I go to a guitar shop

I'm so grateful I got to see Racer X live in small clubs at least ten times. They always were awesome!

I still can't believe I beat out so many guitarists when I auditioned for Black Sheep after Paul Gilbert left to form Racer X.

Bruce was a monster player and he had to be to play with Paul. I prefer his live solo over Paul's off the live Racer X album. This is Paul's Racer X guitar that he and Bruce used. It was used on the first two Racer X albums and for live gigs. Bruce told me it was used by him and Paul and run through a chorus pedal split into two Lee Jackson modded Marshall heads and two cabs for the Second Heat album. They would just hand the guitar back and forth while recording along with Pauls pink Epiphone. Built by Wayne Charvel.
