the NEW Black Dahlia Murder Tone???????

Sounds like a 5150 or some type of boosted or hot rodded Marshall type amp to me. Cool tone. Those guys are sick rhythm players.

EDIT: Actually, I think that might be an Engl Invader on the recording. I remember DerekB saying he sold one of those dudes an Invader so he could use it on the new album, and the dude never paid Derek the full amount for it.

Sounds pretty lifeless and stale IMO. Honestly sounds kind of SS-ish... maybe it's the shitty "internal" speakers I'm listening through at work though... but still.

Must be the speakers.

I think it sounds fuckin great. Sounds kinda like a boosted smoothed over 5150.
Ah I wish I could get more details on that ........ for sure.

I was a huge fan of BDM, a reason my chops are so good is because I took the time to learn every song off Unhallowed. Miasma was insane, I can't touch that, but I was sorta disapointed with "What A Horrible Night", seems like there's nothing special there. "I Worship What.." is a little better, I hope the rest of the album is better than these two songs.

He didn't say it sucks and doesn't work for what it is, even if he clearly doesn't like it. I can tell you that I certainly don't hear it and go, "That must be a tube amp!" But then again, I'm not likely to do that with most any modern high gain thinger. It's not overly gained out, but it does get a bit grainy when it breaks up more, like on the chords, and it's pretty compressed.

I'm really diggin the tone on the new record! Could be a bit thicker, and less compressed, but I really like it. The lead tone is SWEET!That's the tone I want, for sure. I've got the 3 song promo, and I just pre-ordered a signed copy of Nocturnal. Can't wait to see these guys with The Absense next month!

I love the compressed sound... I mean it sounds more natural.. Like something that CAN be achieved without alotta studio bullshit.... I got pretty close with my old 5150 and ive heard a XXX get REALLY close without a boost and new tubes... I didnt have a boost though, and my bad monkey of now doesnt do much for the XXX on any settings. Seems like the XXX is not responsive to that pedal at all.

I think im gonna not go the kt77 route like every other xxx owner,,, maybe I will go with the jj 6l6's unless i change from using emg actives, Which I think give it an edgy tone already.

John lives right down the street from me. He went to school with my Son, Ian. We've been talking about doing a signature module set for him but we HAVE NOT done it yet. I'll try to find out what he used on the last recordings.

Usually, the modern metal stuff is the most unrealistic stuff out there, as far as being able to directly reproduce the sound of the recording. They tend to back off the gain, and then record four, or even more, tracks of the exact same parts, often using different equipment for each one, and with heavy compression to glue it all together. Technically, most are just "double" tracked, but it seems that 99% of the bands that play anything remotely like this today have two guitarists that almost exclusively play the exact same parts. The end result is nothing you are ever going to hear coming from just one person playing any crazy rig you could imagine.

It's no wonder to me that HC is chock full of people after this sort of sound, that go through every amp, and then some, even buying and selling the same amps over and over, and never being happy with it.

I don't doubt that you couldn't get very close to it, as a boosted high gain amp will certainly get the very compressed sound of the recordings, but to say it's more natural and doesn't take "studio bullshit" is about as off the mark to me as it gets.

I wouldnt have said it... Unless I didnt get pretty damn close with a 2 head setup with just me playing. I sold that setup a long time ago and wish I didnt, It was a 5150 and a peavey ultra plus head through corrosponding cabs.

The sound doesnt ... seem to be that changed or modified. IVe heard a XXX + Dual rectifier get VERy close to that sound too on a local bands recording. They tracked 1 guitar a peice through their amps.

I think its alot more attainable than most sounds you hear...
Im just debating on wether my XXX can get closer to it than a 5150.
And with 6l6's. Because I definatly hear more of a 6l6 vibe, although some amps
make el34's sound the bomb. But I prefer 6l6's in peavey amps it seems, Which is
why id love to get osm for this xxx. It has el34's.

I won't argue that this isn't easier to get than many other CDs people seem to want to replicate. I just wouldn't go as far as to call it "natural." Sans all studio magic, it's still two guys playing the same part in stereo to give it a lot of that sound.

^ I can see where the dude's coming from. He's saying it sounds natural in that the "natural" amp tone sounds a bit more processed and polished - like an amp that's been polished in the studio, thereby making it easier to attain those types of sounds in a live situation.

Although, the 2 guitar thing is a good analogy, and one of the reasons I use 2 seperate rigs in my band. I'm the sole guitar player, and I love to have a thickass sound that can give a better sense of depth and also provide some cool dynamics when switching one in and out for added punch to certain songs.

The new album was recorded with a 5150. Someone who was harassing John over the DerekB situation messaged them on MySpace asking about it, and their reply was "the album was recorded with a 5150, faggot". Verbatim. So yeah, the tone you guys are hearing is pure 5150, NOT ENGL.

Yeah. Plus 2 days ago I messaged them myself and asked what it was recorded with.

They replied "5150 for sure"
