I know, I know... Bruce and Jeff are busy on the Renegade 50 and Rebel 30... yada yada. But I couldn't help it. It's a slow day here, I'm working on something tedious, and my mind is wandering about new modules.

So, this is my ideal setup:
CHANNEL 1: CLEAN Clean
CHANNEL 2: Plexi Crunch
CHANNEL 3: British high gain
CHANNEL 4: British high gain, for solos.

Channel 3 and 4 is EASILY achieved with either an SL2 or an EG3/4, depending on the desired flavor/brightness.

What I really want is a module that has a bold, spanky, big British clean tone with a hint of breakup on channel 1, and then basically channel B of the SL on channel 2.

The BMAN is close... but not quite *it*. The SL just can't get spanky enough on ChA. And the T/D sounds GREAT, but sometimes the "D" side sounds out of place next to an SL2.

Can this be done? Can the SL be modded to achieve this?

UPDATE: Ok, so I finally had the chance to try out a BMAN in my Mod50, loaded with EL34s. And THAT's the tone I was looking for. All along, it wasn't so much the preamp not getting me there, it was the fact that I just needed to swap out the tubes to EL34s to make it sound more "british"...

So this thread is kinda useless now. My apologies for starting another "make me this module" thread...

(Peter Griffin voice) Whoah whoah whoah whoah whoah whoah whoah, Lois...

hold the phone. T/V? Twin/Vox?

I *think* I've heard of this, but is it for real? That would actually be perfect for me.

Ok, just did a quick internet search and found this:

" It's kind of custom deal that is a Twin module with Vox eq on both channels. So not Twin and not Vox on either, but a combination of both of them on both channels"

So, if they can make a Twin dual module with a vox EQ, can they make a T/D with a VX EQ?

Would that "match up" with an SL2?

You ever think of trying lower output 12ax7s in the BMAN???

I've got a BMAN w/ 5751s in V1 and that highers the headroom of the BMAN. I'm really happy with the BMAN with Jan Philips 5751s and a TS 12ax7 in V2. The 5751 is about 70% of the gain of a normal 12ax7. Or try a JP 12AT7 also. I think you'll be really pleased w/ the BMAN at that point honestly with what you described for Ch 1&2.

Eric, where did you get your JP 5751s?

thetubestore.com I have had awesome luck with them man. I use them in V1 of all of my lower gain - mid-gain modules. DLX, VX, BMAN, SL, and COD. That combo w/ a TS 12ax7 is my go to for everything but high-gain. Chinese 12ax7 in V1 is what I use for higain :)

Eric

perhaps thats why I'm not totally in love with the BMAN yet... cuz I've only heard it with chinese tubes?

Did you look in my BMan? I didnt think I had chinese in there...

I think you do, matt... When you're doing your jamming tonight, do some swaps and see what it sounds like with some other tubes.

I really doubt its Silver Dragons since I use them for high gain. MAYBE I have Rubys in there but I really thought I put Tung Sols in there when I sold my T/D.

But you need to remember that the TS 12ax7's have close to the same amount of gain as a Chinese...not the same tone at all, but similar amounts of gain. A JP 5751 has about 70% of the gain of a normal 12ax7. But it has the feel and such of a normal 12ax7. It's really given the VX and BMAN a bit more headroom, which I really really like. But the feel doesn't really change, except its a bit warmer and sweeter. It's stellar on both the VX and BMAN.

Yeah Eric, true about the gain and I hear you. I just considered TS to be most "toneful" of the preamp tubes so I tended to put it more in my clean and midgain modules. Maybe Ill try that 5751. I could use a tad more headroom on the Channel A of the BMan.

I agree on the tonefulness of the TS 12ax7. I actually think for low-mid gain stuff, the JP 5751's are as toneful, if not more. I love them man!!

Eric

I agree 100 percent on the 5751 in V1 for a sweeter sound.

I've also had luck with putting an JP 5751 in V1 in the head as well. Sweetens up the head a bit as well.

FWIW Nick, I have really become hooked on the VX as first slot module for all my cleans, mid gains and even some higher gain sounds. Ch A set clean has a spanky tone to it and I like it because it shimmers with a little chorus and delay on it. Kick in a BB preamp and you have a great mid gain, boosted/bluesy thing. Ch B by itself is a great mid gain with a the british grind and I add an AC booster which just makes a great higher gain rythym and/or lead. I really like the natural compression on the high gain settings.

Jan Philips 5751s - Sounds like something to try for sure. I tried a Mullard 12AT7 in V1 and noticed little to no difference in headroom or tone so I reinstalled the JJ ECC803S in V1/TS 12AX7 in V2.
Biggest issue with the BMAN is EQing between channel A and B and finding the balance. I use the BB on channel B to tighten it up. That could be another option.
