I had a Herbert to try in 2006 for about 2 months and I just couldn't bond with it. I found the pre distortion a little grainy for my tastes. Can any of you VH4 users comment on your amps? Anyone with both that can describe the differences?
Thanks!

I don't find any of the Diezel amps to be grainy. I find them all to be very rich, full, crisp and clear, articulate and BIG sounding. Not harsh in any way IMO. They are very musical to my ears.

I am saying that I personally found the Herbert I had to be grainy in the preamp distortion. Sound is a subjective thing. I am not trying to put Diezel amps down. On the contrary, I am extremely impressed with the clips I have heard on the internet and just trying to get some feedback from owners of VH4s.

mind setting a few examples?

what band or bands have the sound you're after?
What band/song has what you would describe a "grainy tone"?

That just tells me that you haven't dialed the amp right or the cabinet sucked.

Nobody here is worried that you are putting Diezel amps down. We can all agree sound is a subjective thing and we all like different types of tones. That is no problem. I still apply the thoughts of my initial comment to any Diezel amp from my experience. I have written (as have others) many thoughts regarding the amps. In fact, recently there was a highlight of the three amps and and contrasting of the three amps in a recent thread. That thread may be a big help to you.

Not a very smart answer. I had the thing for 2 months and I have 5 different cabs that all sound great. Check the amps in my sig. The Herbert wasn't the only amp in the room.

I tried to find it but couldn't. Do you remember the title? Thanks.

The difference between 3 Diezels or something similar...

Found it. Thanks! I'm going to call Andy Churner who is the Canadian distibutor here in Montreal and go over there and spend some time with the VH4.

Well, I'm not really that smart anyway.

If you search for Nollythegreat, on youtube, he uses a VH4 on his clip over the past few months

Too grainy? Wow! Imho Herbie could be a little bit more.

And how do you think about Rectifier´s? =Grainiac?

Two months with Herbert – dude! You haven't even dented the surface of all the amazing tones that Herbert will dish out for you.

If you "found the pre distortion a little grainy" then don’t use so much of the front end. Herbert and Diezel amps for that matter are much more "hi-fi" then your average run-of-the-mill guitar amps.

Remember you’ve got one of, if not the best channel switching master volume all tube power amp possible. Just lay down the preamp section and bump up the master volume and you’ll be pushing the backend much more. For instance, channel volume 9:00, master volume 1, 12:00. Instant power tube saturation and it will be much less "sympathetic" when you clam a few.
