Thinking of buying a V

Hey All,

I have a shot to buy a nice (but expensive) flying V. I have not played one in forever. I am generally a les paul or super strat guy. I am looking at this partly for childhood wish fulfillment to buy it (it is a unique and fairly rare guitar at a good price), but I'm not sure if I would really use it. I mostly play sitting down and my understanding is they suck to play that way. Not sure if it is worth dropping the coin on something that may just sit on the wall. Any opinions on that switch from traditional guitars to Vs for a sit down player are welcome. Thanks!

Love them . You can sit down . It’s different but doable
Thanks for the insight. Is it awkward on your left arm position? Also I've heard you play--pretty sure you could shred with your tongue while doing a headspin. I may be more delicate to the positioning haha.

My main guitars are V’s and their super comfortable to play sitting down. I feel they put my left hand in the best position out of all my guitars. Just stick it between your legs and rip….like the good book said 😉

My advice is just do it. They really are so well balanced and sound great.

One thing I like about V’s is the right hand position when I’m playing sitting down. As odd as the shape is, I feel like I have more control over my right hand when it’s closer to my body.

sitting correctly with a V puts the guitar in the exact same position as standing (with any guitar) so it is the ultimate guitar for switching from sitting to standing

Dude. A V is on my list to buy in 2024. LEF has a body and neck of a rhoads for 650. If he would have posted it one day earlier I would have purchased it instead of the FM3.

I haven't seen the DV8 so I'm looking forward to pics. I'm really picky on guitar shapes. Like the ESP arrow looks killer but I don't like the curve on the top fin. I like the KH V but black sparkle? That is such a fucking Kirk Hammet thing to do(take something metal af and put glitter on it). Had it been any color other than the ones he chose it would have been an instant buy. I love rhoads models but I've got to where I want stainless frets to where they are a must have now. Finally I love the Solar V shapes but the QC horror stories scare me away from that.

I saw chubtone post a king v looking guitar which surprised me. I asked a few weeks ago if the would do something like that and it didn't seem like something they wanted to get into. If they would do 24 frets , single cuts, and v's I would never need to buy another guitar brand.

If you're used to a Les Paul, be aware that the same 2 humbucker config in a Flying V will sound slightly thinner usually than in a Les Paul.

If the goal is to get a similar tone from the V, be sure to look for more bassy/big sounding pickups.
On my 2010 Gibson V ('67 RI with ebony board) I've replaced the complete pickguard + pickups and electronics.
Dimarzio Super Distortion bridge (pretty good choice, considering other options...) and Dimarzio Breed Neck (effin' awesome in this guitar! Sounds huge, but still open and clear.)

Among many different guitar brands/models I own, I have three main guitar brands/models, one is Jackson Rhoads with FR; when sitting or standing I use a strap to get the guitar in comfortable position.

I would imagine due to the smaller body size that wouldn’t sit as easily as a full size Gibson V would.

it does sit well but has neck dive when sitting, unless you support it, e.g., use your picking hand forearm to hold it in place (not optimal); I use a strap to keep it at a comfortable angle and height.
