Hey Guys,
It's been a while...
I've been working on three different 2 channel prototypes and this is the most recent one.
I finally stumbled across the perfect Fender for this project. It is a 1974 Twin Reverb that was converted to a head in 2009 and had the OT changed to a TAD made in USA '65 Blackface spec paper bobbin OT.
I've been thinking about doing a Fender rebuild since I saw Johan Segeborn's video of a Bogner-modded Super Reverb, which sounded very special.
It's still quite different due to 4x 6L6 and solid state rectifier but oh well...
I rebuilt the amp with a clean and overdrive channel, which are built on top of each other, similar to a Dumble or Boogie MK series.
To solve some of the problems when it comes to channel switching versatility, I added a separate set of bass and treble controls for the overdrive channel, so that you can set the pre-EQ for the channels independently because a good clean setting will sound quite bad for the overdrive channel and vice versa.
I removed the reverb and tremolo and put in a tube-buffered FX loop instead.
It's still running the 12AT7 phase inverter and 6L6 GC power tubes.
I also added NFB and presence controls, which can change the sound and feel quite a lot.
Comparing it to my rebuilt 2203 prototype via the fx loops, it's really interesting to hear how different the Fender power amp sounds. It's definitely smoother and softer, which adds a really fun chewiness to the overdrive.
I tried the amp at rehearsal last week through my 80s 1960BV cab and it was awesome at high volumes.
Here's a redacted gut shot for y'all haha.
I know, the board is gunked like crazy...
And here's a video of the amp through my standard Greenback setup with two Strats and a Les Paul + a sneak peek at my upcoming Ozzy cover that I recorded with the amp.
