Thoughts on Killswitch's new guitar tones?

Just seems to sound like the usual heavy djenty tone these bands get. Who knows if they'll ever achieve the heights of everyone and their Mama demoing a heavy sound with Rose of Sharyn again!!

Sounds like they're going for a tighter and somewhat thinner, more behaved tone. I dig the music (and all KSE for that matter) but not loving what I'm hearing guitar tone wise. Disarm sort of went in this direction too but still had that raw pissed off sound. This is somewhat tame for them.

 100%..

The best tone they got was that album with End of Heartache, or whatever the name of it was. Wasn't that all 5150 and Framus Cobra or Dragon? That was pretty killer metal tone. They've always had good tone, but it's been downhill since that album.

Oh man do I miss Howard Jones in that band.... :(

I have mixed feelings on that song, it's mostly unimpressive but I am glad to see Adam D go for a solo. KSE doesn't usually do lead work.

Being a huge KSE fan, I still say their best work is the 2nd self titled album in 2009, with the leopard head on the cover.

Yep...theyve used everything from 5150, framus, rectos, splawn nitros.....i thought joel was using a ksr/rhodes now....? End of heartache was a killer tone for what they do...not my bag but nice.

See, I'm on the opposite end, I'm glad to see Jesse back. But I can admit that Howard is most likely the biggest reason they reached huge fame, movie soundtracks, etc.. IMHO I thought Howards voice didn't fit because it was too.. over the top? Or too good? I can see Howard doing a lot more diverse things with his voice.

Huuuuuuge KSE fan here, but i gotta hive the best album to As Daylight Dies!!!!! Man, the riffs on that album  god damn.

End of heartache and the first album get second votes from me. I thought the leopard one was meh? To me at least.

But yeah, they always had great tones.

Just listened to the song

Fuuuck, i love it. The tones are OK, not their best but it fits, i guess. Would be better with a more fatter aggressive one but still does the job fine.

I have high hopes for the new album as the last couple ones where not my thing to much.

If I like it, it's pretty good. Not that I'm anybody, but I tend to hate everything. I can't stand the new Megedeth album. This is a good fucking tune. It's got riffs, melody, hooks, the whole bit. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
The tone in the beginning sounds rectoish to me, then it turns into something else that I can't quite pinpoint. The tone is good though. I like it.

My favorite KSE disc has to be Alive or Just Breathing , lots of great songs .

Tone is much more controlled, dare I say "poppy" sounding for KSE. Sounds good to me. Can't say I like the song...but I haven't been into anything they've done since The End of Heartache. Alive or Just Breathing is one of my favorite albums of all time. End of Heartache is great too, but it just got so cheesy after that. This song in particular is so cheesy I didn't even finish the whole thing. It screams (quite literally) lame.

I'm glad Jesse is in the band full time now. I like Howard's vocals a lot, but Jesse's performance on AoJB is unmatched in the genre, IMO. Raw, powerful, and emotional without coming off as sappy/cheesy. Wish I could say the same for the stuff they're doing now.

Yeah I posted the thread cuz the guitar tone sounds kinda thin to me. I know bands change tones album to album and that's totally fine. But KSE is kinda known for that thick crushing tone. I know they've been dumping amps left and right on Reverb.com. So I guess they went Kemper and aren't looking back. That's fine. What I'm saying is to my ears I've heard the Kemper tracked better by a lot of you guys on this forum.

I think the song is good. Just not feeling the guitar tone, especially when Adam plays the riff by himself.

Alive or Just breathing, Heartache and Disarm the Descent are killer. Daylight was rad too but nothing could follow the momentum of end of heartache. That was a massive album and came out at the perfect time.

I am noticing that a lot of metal bands are using way thinner and more mid heavy guitar tones. I don't care for it. Metal is guitar music where the guitars should kick the shit out of the listener.

I can totally see why bands would tour with a kemper / axefx units because it's just so much easier for them and roadies etc. I can also see why guys on a budget or with space constraints would use them for recording but when you have a lot of money and a really great studio set up not to mention access to any amp, cab and pedal on earth, why would you use a digital unit? To each their own though.

Right, but kept in mind, the modeling stuff like Kemper, Fractal is capable of crushing tones too. This is just what they are going for tone wise. On Descent they used amps (Laney Ironheart among others) and I think they got the mix of lean low end and cutting mids but still enough punch to sound mean. Sweet leads on that one too. That mindset actually started when Adam moved to passive pickups for the Times of Grace album.

Some bands use that stuff very effectively. The tone on the new KSE aint bad by any means but some bands like After the burial have really gone downhill tonally with the use of digital rigs. A lot of guys with the extended range guitars aren't using their gear properly. The djent sound is really just getting too compressed and fake sounding.

I don't think it's fair to say the downhill slide tonally is due to using these high-end digital units. Rather, it's a conscious decision by these bands to change their recorded sound. They could get thin tones with any amp.
