To DI, or not DI..? Torpedo Cab and Pedal board to Mixer

Hi guys,
Just wanting some direction regarding the use of a DI box after modulation effects (Reverb) I have planned to come after my Torpedo CAB (as is recommended in the illustration). Do I really need to put DI between the Reverb out and my Mixer desk? I only have a mono Reverb out so there would only need to be one DI. Just wondering if it's necessary because the final output is an "effects pedal" (Reverb) and not the Torpedo Cab? Would it benefit my final sound output in any way to add the DI?
I am certainly happy to purchase one if that's the case. I just want the best possible quality sound.
If the answer is yes I need one - then what would you suggest? I have heard that the Radial PRo JDI is good - and should it be a passive DI?
Regards, Paul.

Hi Paul,

do you NEED it? i'd say no.

Should you consider buying one if you go onstage? I'd say yes. ;)

For every Line level product (even your reverb), using a DI will help protect your system against a lot of things that can happen on stage, such has plugging into an XLR patch where the sound guy send 48V (phantom power) on each line...

If the Reverb sends an unbalanced and somehow low voltage signal or has a high output impedance, the DI will help the signal travel in good condition up to the FOH mixer.

At home, well, just do the test without a DI, I don't really see why it should be necessary.

Hi guillaume,

Thanks for that - I think I'll use a DI on stage anyway, as I think it may just help to sweeten the sound.
Just on that - if I use only the Reverb out, what cable should I use? Balanced TRS to XLR into a Mic input, or TR only into
a Mixer line input?
Kind Regards,
Paul.

Well, it depends on the reverb actually. Usually pedals have unbalanced output, so an unbalanced TS to XLR should work.

Be careful on how the TS to XLR wiring is done, here is a reference document about that:

Some DI have 1/4" input though.

And from the DI, XLR to XLR, to the mixer. ;) Mic or Line input doesn't really matter, use the one that gives you enough headroom without needing too much gain.

Thanks once again guillaume - I really appreciate your time and wise words..!

Regards,
Paul.
