havent posted since joining and sayin hi, but thought i'd share this one.
got my rebel 30 1-12 this past xmas from MusiciansFriend, used, at a nice price. i really dont know what MF definition of "used" truly encompasses. the amp came in perfect visible condition, but channel one was dead at on. checked the preamp tubes and found one completely clear with water spots burned into it. replaced with a spare and was rockin.
i figured i'd change all the tubes to be safe. as luck would have it i could never get a local store that had pairs of power tubes or had every tube that i didnt need. moneys been tight or i wouldve just ordered the whole retube set online. in the last few months i was able to get all preamps tube and el84's. i finally ordered some 6v6's, and they came in friday.
getting to the point, i unclipped the retainer springs, removed the tubes with clips and rubber caps still on. the clips DID NOT want to come off the rubber caps, and the rubber caps were married to the tubes. one finally peeled off, the other, as you can see in the pic, it didnt make it. the broken tube crumbled in my hand. i handle glass all day for a living, so i know i was careful. it just disintegrated when i tried to peel off the cap, which is crispy and torn. the other is so burnt no light shines through it.
i've never had any of my amps blacken a tube like this. what really freaks me out, is the amp was still playing up til i took them out. and didnt sound bad.
bias reading was at 30mv on both sides, using a earlier post for reference i set both at 40mv. sounds great. i'll have the opportunity to crank up later tonight and see what really changed on the 6v6 side. i realized when i was putting the back on i had missed changing the P.I. tube. damn! another time i guess.

oh yeah, putting the clips back on seems like a bad idea to me. especially without the cap under it.
they feel good and tight right now.
