OK guys-

Doing some recording today. Got a 4212 and a maple neck custom classic Stratocaster. Be playing some bottleneck stuff.

I want a kind of glassy, snarly, tone. I'm thinking channel 2 a little overdriven with some reverb. I want some snap in the tone.

Any suggestions?

What about miking? I usually just throw a 57 about an inch in front of one of the speakers, but what the heck. I've also got a 58, an Audix OM5, an AKG C 2000 B, and an Audio-Technica AT 3035.

Thanks!

The sm57 and AT 3035 are the two combo's I use consistently in my studio. The 57 always sounds great on a cabinet but I also like the shimmery-ness, yes that is a real recording term     that the AT 3035 gives it. I just turn on the -10 db pad and turn the shelving filter on at the mic. I know you will get the clear sounds of the glass slide added in to the depth and body of that amp if you go with this mic combo. It has proven itself time and time again in my studio.

Hope that gives you a quick place to start. After all recording is about experimenting and you have quite a few good mics to choose from. You will surely be having a fun day getting to record.

Don't forget to give us all a little sample of the sounds your getting. We tone freaks need our daily fix of the tones people are recording. :D :D

I'm thinking a little chorusing might help too. Do you put the 57 up close and the AT distant? If so, how distant?

Thanks!

:m17:

The Egnater amps record very well. I think you will have a great sound.

It depends on the situation for mic placement. I always put the SM57 from right into the grill to 1 foot away never any further than that. The AT 3035 is either right even with the SM57 capsule or I move it out to the 3 foot mark but those are the only two spots I get the best results with the rooms I use.

The cleaner the guitar tone the more it can benefit from the 3 foot mark. Any Metal I record it both capsules even with each other usually 1 to 4 inches from the speaker grill.

Well, I ended up with the 57 about 3 inches away and the AT about 3 feet. Separate tracks for each. Thought it sounded really cool last night; want to check it again today. The AT is about a foot higher then the 57 so it is not right in front of the amp. Threw a little chorusing on, channel 2 on the 4212 with their "American Rythym" suggested setting. Strat was in open G tuning in between middle and bridge pickup.

All this for an 8 bar solo, and I ain't much of a slide player! Well that's how it goes...

    I have to laugh because the crazy things I have done in the past just to get that one little track to be the way I want it. The poor mic's looked like they was in a freakish twister game that got out of control. :aww: :aww: It wasn't too pretty
