i'm sure it's been asked before, so i apologize

but i'd like to hear some metal clips using the tonelab (direct preferably)

most of you know what i like. but post anything that's metal (def leppard isn't metal in this case, neither is glam metal, or nu-metal)

I've done some searching myself, though haven't found anything real good yet, so I'd be interested in these as well.

I'm working on it... I got a Tonelab LE yesterday, and have been tweaking when I have the chance... right now I'm trying to beat "tweaker's fatigue" - after a while I get to thinking that the cab models blow, then I A/B with my MagicStomp and think... "huh, that's not sounding good at all right now either" even though I know it does a good job in a mix on my stuff at least.

I don't know if this helps...
Ty the modern UK with the gain not to high because it has a lot (between 3-5) with the VR gain cranked with the 75 cab.
Set it to Line out 2 and with the built in post EQ roll off 2-3 dB of highs to reduce that bit of fizz.
It took me a bit of time, but I'm really liking the tone direct with this unit...and the feel is great.

I think the tonelab could do a pretty good 80s hair metal or early preist sound - but i couldn't really get the metal mojo going on any of them to be honest...

great for other stuff though.

So far what I've gotten with it has been a decent enough thicker Mesa sound, a Soldano sound that reminds me of Megadeth's "Rust in Peace" but has a bit more sag to it, and a Marshall tone with similar settings to what was already mentioned. The highs didn't bother me as much as the weird midrange the cab models seem to have, but admittedly that's only when I listen on axis to the speakers I'm playing through - probably doesn't matter as much in a mix. And admittedly the MagicStomp has a DIFFERENT weird midrange when I listen in a similar position. And I'm guessing every amp in existence would have that as well. It's still been fucking with my head the last day or so though. ;)

Anyway, I will try those settings - I used the post EQ to kind of get rid of those mids I was talking about, but it ended up just thinning the tone when I stood up and played (or in a mix, I tried it). We'll see what I come up with.

Ok, excuse the playing, my main axe is off for some repairs so I used my old Gibson that desperately needs a setup. Using a Duncan Distortion in the bridge position. My main concern is that it sounds a bit hollow in the midrange, but I'm sure some kind of actual post-processing would help - as it is, the guitar tracks are all Tonelab - two tracks of UK Modern (boosted with the SD-1 model) and one track of US High Gain (no boost, center panned and lower in the mix to fill a bit more). Probably not as brutal as you're looking for, but I'm just trying to get a feel for what kind of tone I want to get out of it personally.

Any suggestions from any Tonelab users past or present would help, too.

If you haven't already, select the Recto model, but add the Treble Boost up front and then run through the V30 cab. It will tighten the bass and add a lot of midrange. The Treble booster is from Vox's design for Brian May IIRC. It compares favorably to my Germania Treble Booster which does basically the same trick to my Tremoverb. I also like the SLO model with the Tube OD pushing it to be tighter through the 75 cab. IIRC, the AC/DC patch is actually a low gain SLO model instead of a Plexi like you'd think.

Sounds great...I like the squishies on the pick attack a lot.
Backing way off on the bass with the Modern UK setting (2-3) is a good way to tighten the bass and the mids seem to come through more as well...the amp tone controls seem pretty interactive. For boosting pedals I really like the tube pedal and the fat (Rat) pedal....the tone controls for these are good for adding or taking away aggression.

I did this a few months back when I first put an HN3 in my G&L Legacy. The playing's all over the place, but it's more metal than a lot of the clips I've heard of the Tonelab. It was recorded direct using the optical out.

Not bad - pretty tight. Do you remember ballpark settings for that?

btw, I was asking for a friend who has a pod and fucking hates it.

Should he just go with the behringer v amp for direct recording if he's mostly gonna be doing metal?

Tim, your clip's tone is one of the best direct clips of a modeler that I've heard posted  If you didn't say that it was a ToneLab, I might have thought it was mic'ed amp/cab. Sounds a little bit "hollow" though otherwise, it's pretty much tweaked close to the way I'd do it.

Variable, nice in your face crunch tone on the chording. Also a great direct tone. Both of ya tweak well.

Alright, I've been having a bit of luck with the US Modern (no boost) through the 75 cab... it seems that the other cabs are... pretty well useless for heavier tones. Then again, I haven't really tried to tweak them that much.

No clip this time... I'm having trouble sitting the thing in a mix - I find if I use that and do a pretty radical cut at 7hz or so that I get a pretty good "present but not brittle" tone. Overall the guitar itself sounds better without the cut, but it won't sit in a mix without it. I don't know. Compared to the MagicStomp, the MagicStomp sounds very scooped somewhere in the low mids, but the Tonelab sounds kind of odd in the same sort of area.

Soon... soon I will figure it out.

It's good that you are giving it time...I didn't really have it figured out for the first week either.
Like all modelers, it won't sound just like a tube amp that you are used to, it will have it's own flavor.
I don't compare it to a Marshall or a Mesa or any other amp for that matter, dial it in for a good tone and it is a good tone.
I love the feel of it for a modeler, big win there.

Yeah... I'm also trying to get it figured out for live use... honestly I've become fairly lost as far as live tone as I've used the DG Stomp for so long... so I don't even know what the thing SHOULD sound like. The three "amp" output settings sound like complete ass unless I'm right on axis with the speaker (it's the whole "sounds like there's about ten blankets on the cab" thing). The line settings without cabs sound pretty ratty on axis, muffled off axis, but somewhere in the middle sound pretty decent. And since it's been so long since I've played with an amp head, I forget how the things sound at this point... haha

We'll see how it works with the band tomorrow. That will change how it sounds a lot.

I know what you mean about the amp output settings..it's really a workaround thing with this unit and I found the same thing with Line 6 stuff, but even worse.
If I was involved in making a unit like this, the presets would be good dammit.
