What do you use to get that synth like distorted sound like Pushit?

If you wanna get that sound it's very important that you have a flanger with the right settings and most of all runnig in front of the amp. Set your bridge pickup (JB) with the tone about 3 or 4 for a darker sound. Then set the setting for a distortion with not to much gain but very crunchy rich in mids. The synth pedals are not used in this song by the way. He uses in fact that pedals but in about 4 or 5 songs only.
This is only my advice. rock on

So I just need to get a Boss BF-2?

I'm pretty sure that nowadays onstage he uses the virus b/moog pedals to get any synth type sounds live. But in the mid 90's that was not a part of his rig which would lead me to believe that the bf-2 or a boss bass synth pedal was giving him that tone. Sounds like like the tone is backed way off too. goodluck.

I have a bf-3 and it does the trick. In fact his flanger and delay combination it's the hole trick for that wierd feedback in most of his songs. I'm pretty sure that he started using synth pedals and that virus unit prior to aenema.

For me a BF-2 flanger alone in front of the amp doesn't do it. I'd use a BF-2, a delay and possibly a wah all in front of the amp with the guitar's volume knob turned down to 50%-70%, bridge pickup. With this combination you can get really close to a lot of sounds from the Aenema album. With a flanger alone the repeated oscillation of the effect is too noticeable. You need a delay to spread it out. Use the wah only slightly for texture. But anyway, to my ears a delay and flanger in front of the amp are most important.

This is an old thread, and I'm probably late... but I've heard that back int he 90's, during Aenema, he used the motor from an Epilady (electric shaver) to get that droning sound on songs like Pushit. But, really... I don't think that's true (maybe in the studio, but not live at least). It was basically a ghetto version of an eBow (which Adam never used).

May as well contribute:

If I remember correctly he used a Ibanez DFL for the recording, then later switched to a MIJ BF-2, the newer BF-3s are made in Taiwan and sound different.

I don't think the synth came along during Aenima era. He was only using a flanger and delay, wah and EQ in front of the amps. Which is where I got my usually current set up from - no FX loop. The BF2 or 3, whichever you use really brightens up the tone. The EQ can cull that out, which you can hear during Pushit. He was using an Ibanez delay then, but uses a Boss as well. He only uses channel 3 of the VH4 and whatever other studio amp he needed at the time. That epilady didn't come along until Lateralus.

Set your signal chain up as wah, delay, flange, EQ. Boost mids on the VH4 CH3 and put a smiley face on the EQ. Mix in some reverb on the production. Probably a 200-500 ms delay. It is about the same set up as played on Schism too.

Yeah, no synth until Lateralus. Epilady was definitely for Aenema, not Lateralus (if he used it at all, could just be a joke - and a bad one at that).

So can you hook up your guitar strait to Access Virus units or they work midi?

I have an access virus b. You can hook your guitar up to it and use its filters (ie flange type effects and quite a few that aren't standard) but it won't trigger notes like a midi controller will. I hope that makes sense.

There's a lot of mystery behind Adam's tone at times... I can totally appreciate why. However, googling this sort of thing won't get you the real deal - it'll only tell you part of the story. And furthermore, asking him directly will probably result in a smirk and that "what...? can't find yer own sound?" look.

He's used several stomps. And yes, even an Epilady. However, there's a number of things to bear in mind - sometimes the FX are in front of his amps, sometimes in the loop, sometime post production. His style is unique - can't say enough about tone being in the hands of the beholder. He uses a variety of amps - bluefaces, mesa, recent iterations of V's, etc. but the thing that I think made it ALL come together for me once was seeing the synth the band used, and Adam used, in a studio photo. The thing was the size of a small VW bug. Does anyone remember that 70's movie called Demonseed? Where the computer takes over the home and wants to impregnate the lady of the house - wants to 'experience' birthing and parenting a child of 'its' own?? Well, good movie if you get a chance to see it - but aside from that, the computer-thing in the basement in this movie is the first thing I thought about when seeing the Tool synth.

It's a bit over the top. So, flange, wah, DD, and so forth are great - but to get that contoured, 3D, sonically enriched tone that only professional playing and studio workmanship can offer, well, I guess I just said it there.

Peace,
V.

Those synths are Danny's and he uses them, not Adam (except that Virus). For Pushit, you don't really need anything except an amp and a guitar to get that droning sound. Check this out:

Tight playing, nicely done. As for the synth, it's used by the entire band for everything from vox to skins. There's a shitload of processed sound in recent Tool music. Perhaps NOT in Pushit or that era, but they've embraced technology fairly willingly.

But hey, I'm not here to fight about it...
V.

PS - I take it you've looped the FX as opposed to stuck 'em in front, yes?

That's not me playing in that vid. I wish it were, though. :) That guy has a video of his setup on his YT channel.

I wondered - I know your '79 is in way better shape :D

That guys channel is one of the best places to learn how to play TOOL guitar material. I have subscribed to it for a long time. ..... his gear video and rig is pretty good. The setting on the amp are I believe accurate. Well worth checking out if interested in what AJ is doing. Maybe not perfect ... but he has done his homework.
