I thought this was interesting.. apparently the Ozzy camp was pretty cheap when it came to finding a replacement for Randy and they were set on resuming the tour as fast as possible. I am listening to part of the story here:

looks like Torme got the deal because he agreed to do a few shows for 200$ a week? Lots of other players tried out for the gig but nobody stuck. I hear Sarzo talking about how good his brother was but I listened to him play and I would say he's a C+ player at best.

Anyway, what I did find interesting despite the dislike for Torme, is the fact that he had less time to learn the songs than Gillis did and although he improvises a ton in the gig, Randy's pedalboard and most importantly, his Altec cabs make everything sound so mean and wild. You can literally just divebomb and it cuts like a razo. Hold a note and shake some vibrato, it delivers. This further convinces me that those Altecs are 80% of that tone. Wish they weren't so hard to find on the used market!

Torme was too bluesy for that gig.

For sure. But I am talking his tone.. he is using Randy's gear and it's passable because that aggressive tone is there. When he is lost or doesn't know what to do, he dives or he holds a high note and shakes the shit out of it. It works. Playing isn't the right fit.

Altec’s are some of my favorite all time speakers as well as JBL’s. Both have a sharp aggression and detail in the highs that isn’t in the cards for any celestions as well as a bigger, more extended low end low than any Celestion, while Celestion’s bring the mids a lot better

The only Celestion’s I’ve tried that can rival those speakers in 3D quality tone are the ‘60’s early white voice coil greenbacks and ‘60’s Alnico Blues or Silvers
