Dear all,

The Torpedo Live arrived yesterday, and I want to use it with my VH4 and FL 2x12 cab. The load of the Torpedo is 8 Ohm.
That is what I plan to do. Use the 2x8 / 4Ohm speaker output of the VH4, plug one into the Toledo and one in the 8 Ohm input
of the cab. Is that OK? Peter?

Well, I am not Peter.....but:

a) If you are not using a cab, you must use the 8 ohm outlet of the VH4 as the Torpedo Live is fixed at 8 ohm.

b) If you are using the Torpedo AND a cab, the load of the Torpedo is bypassed and you revert to the ohm rating of the cab, which in your case is 1x8 ohms.

I agree with a) and b). Wrt b): this is correct one uses the thru output of the Torpedo. I do not plan to use it and only use the speaker input and that gives a load of 8 Ohm. If I combine this with the 8 Ohm cab which is directly connected to the VH4, the VH4 sees 2 times 8 Ohm in parallel, and this is equivalent to 4 Ohm, hence I think (! and I am not sure and therefore I posted this question!) I should take the 2 x 8 Ohm = 1 x 4 Ohm speaker output of the VH4.

Once you plug into the "speaker thru" of the Torpedo Live, the load of the Torpedo Live is bypassed and the amp only sees the speaker load of the cab. Use that speaker output on your amp. It doesn't see 8 ohms in the TL and 8 ohm of cab. Only the cab. Use 1 x 8 ohm of the VH4. Using 1 x 4 ohm won't hurt anything though.

The main reason why I prefer the setup I,suggest is that the total langth of speaker cables will be much shorter. Going from VH4 to TL and from TL thru to cab results in a too long cable combination. if I use my suggested setup, I can use two shorter cable.... i also would like to hear the opinion of Peter on what I suggest.

you should email him.

The question is already answered.

EDIT:

When the Torpedo bypasses the internal
load box and is switching to the cab, then it´s
always 8 ohm.

Sorry, have no Torpedo at home.

Torpedo Bypass and cab is 8 ohm
Torpedo on and no cab is 8 ohm
Torpedo on and cab is 2 x 8 ohm = 4 ohm

Peter,

Torpedo without a cab - 8 ohm

Torpedo with an 8 ohm cab - 8 ohm.

You cannot bypass it so to speak. The "speaker thru" simply bypasses the 8 ohm digital load box but still gives a DI signal. It is still an 8 ohm speaker output on the amp if the cab is 8 ohm. If he is running two cabs with the Torpedo, it would be 4 ohms on the amp. Once you plug a cab into the Torpedo, the Torpedo does not present a load on the amp - only the cabs share the load.

steve: I think Jan is talking about hooking up the torpedo and a cab with two cables ON THE VH4 and NOT using the speaker-thru, which would be papa's last list item... two 8ohm loads hooked up to vh4.
So he is NOT talking about: vh4 - torpedo - cab. He is talking about:
Code:
     torpedo
vh <
     cab

Though I honestly doubt you can tell any difference between 1 or 2 or 3m of SPEAKER cable! You are pumping 100W+ through thick 2,5 mm² strands... if you are worried about that, you can get yourself a pair of shorter 1m or so speaker cables; I think e.g. Klotz offers them ready to go, if you prefer not to solder some yourself.

Keeping it simple.

I suspect running the amp at 4 ohms v. 8 ohms will make a larger difference in the tone than running a speaker cable that is a few inches shorter. Just try both and see which sounds better, honestly. I don't see how either method would harm the amp. Just match the impedance.
