So a band of friends of mine had me come in and re-track (record, not play) their drums in the studio they were working in. Spent 3 hours micing and tuning the drums, a nice DW kit with a kickass PorkPie snare. Wish the heads on the drums were new, and that the cymbals were in better shape, but you can't have everything.

These drums were edited by eye in PT8, no beat detective or anything like that. The drums are not stacked, or sound-replaced either. Just some EQ and Compression

I only did the drums, re-amped the bass, and mixed this. I didn't track anything else, though I did have to auto-tune some vocals and EQ the fuck out of the guitars, cause they were done with the Line 6 SpiderValves and a POD, and really didn't have any care put into them. I think the rhythm guitar tone only kinda works in the verses. Also, I wish I could re-track the vox, as I would use a different mic on this guy's voice....This song has my producer's ear tingling with ideas in certain spots...another reason I could re-track some stuff.

I am hearing it on my lab top speakers ...... But I think the song is killer. The melody and that delay does it for me. When the wall of sound hits you and the break down give a interesting feel.

I definitely dig this band. Wouldn't have done the editing on these drum tracks for $40 if I didn't haha. I had a bit of fun with the vocals, especially throwing the filtered "and I'm getting no reply" parts in the choruses. They just seemed super empty without them.

The chorus is my favorite part. Being in a band you want to be in is half the magic.

Tell me something .... is Mothers by Division still alive ? I have spent many nights drinking and dancing in that area years ago.

I believe it is. I've never been there myself, though.

Yea, like I said, I dig this band, but I wouldn't play in it...little too laid back for my writing/playing style.

Thanks ... I believe I still have a book of matches around here some place from there.

I know this is OT but how is the live seen out there these days ? You know from how you see it.

It sucks. Backstabbing and lying between bands, venues who will book a show, then treat you as if you're an unwanted house guest. Just a bunch of skeezy sheisters for show promoters.

....I guess the norm in any city   There's really no camaraderie between bands and stuff like that. The 3rd largest music market in the country is stagnant with very very few prospects in the city. It's clogged with half-assed bands who book every show they can, but do no real work. I think that's what has set my band apart in this city. We actually put in the effort, which no one does. For our CD release at the Metro on Saturday, we've gotten rid of 3000 fliers and something like 1200 promo cd's in the past 3 weeks or so, at every show we can get to. We don't reply on Facebook and MySpace to do our work for us...Real face time with fans and prospective fans is something you can't replace. There is no substitute for putting a real flier or CD directly into someone's hands. I could go on and on about this, but suffice it to say, I'm thankful for the few bands that we can consider friends.

1200 in three weeks. That is cool. I agree there is a lot of strange attitudes in the music world. I have spent a lot of time looking for a singer that I can work with.

Sounds like things have not changed that much out there.

If anything, they've gotten worse in the past 5 years.

Jopp the Band rocks! Cool groove! But the guys should by some amps next time and no Line6...

Don't have anything critical to monitor it with right now, but I think you've done an awesome job capturing the set. Now the mix isn't that good, you need to work on it more. Drums are too forward, pull them back a little.

Oh yea, that mix sucked. Listen to the guitars and vocals...God they were recorded horribly. I finally have the mix sounding decent, but I'm trying to convince these guys to just let me track their album, as the studio they're going to for this stuff is just fucking them over.

I've heard it yesterday through proper monitoring.

Drums were tracked great, I mean VERY VERY good. I hated your overhead mics, you need something better there. However with a few mixing tricks those drums will sound so good that big studios will have to work hard to compete.

Vocals sounded alright to me.

Bass was ok, but needed some work.

Guitars sounded like shit.

Here's the final mix: No Reply FINAL MASTER

I HATED the mic they used on this guy's voice. I love the TLM103 on just about everything, but I don't think it worked on his voice.

Guitars sounded like shit, still sound like shit, but oh well.

I tuned and re-amped the bass through our bassist's SVT Classic and 6x10 with a U87 I borrowed for the day. Mixed it with the DI track, and I think it sounds pretty good. I really dig how it sits in the mix. I'm a big fan of the uber-compressed bass tone though.

The mics used for the overheads were 414's. Not my ideal mics for that application. Could have been worse. Could have been 57's like the other track I'm trying to pull from mix hell. :aww:

This session is riddled with clicks and pops because SOMEONE can't put fades on shit. It's just [CTRL]+F not that hard. Oh well.

Thanks for the comment on the drums, sir. They are totally raw (besides EQ, Comp and verb) with the exception of the floor tom, which was stacked with another sample. They were of course edited for time, but that's about it. I'm loving the sound of the Waves SSL comp. Now if I could just stop that damn sub drop from distorting to hell and back in the mix. The master is a little too compressed, but we aren't super concerned as this isn't being released.

You've lost the punch of the kick & snare in your new mix. If you have a transient mod plug this would be the place to use it. You also need a second long tail verb buss for drums, EQ all the lows & low mids out of it & snap it on snare & toms. you can use a little of the same verb on the guitars too. If you have a tape sim plug add it on your kick. Is your hi-hat panned at all?

bass is too compressed, you need to open it up for the rest of the mix to breathe a little.

Verb bus done, just as you said, hi hat is panned 85% right, and I just noticed I put the wrong version of the mix up. I suck
