This trade is on hold. :D See below.

Please let me know if anyone is interested in trading an Eggie 3/4 or MHG for my EG5.

Thanks!
Rich

I tried the 5881s again today to see if that was why I as not liking the EG5. Everyone swears by this module with the Tung Sol 5881. I still wasn't digging it. So, I thought let me reinstall the Sovtek 12AX7WAs that Jeff sent with the module. I did that and man, I am loving it again! It really sounds so crisp, clear, detailed, no mud, tight, responsive, and just great! I was pulling out AC/DC to VH to Alice in Chains with ease o this thing and the gain never went past noon. It sounds clearer and more controlled with the Sovteks, that is so odd! I never thought the preamp tubes would have THAT much impact. I guess they tweaked this sucker with those tubes so they are staying.

End result Sovteks in the EG5 using the Tung Sol 5881s in the MOD 50, for whatever reason rock. I don't have the gain issues as before. There is a ton of gain there but at about noon I find it to be tone heaven. Like a totally new amp from earlier this week and earlier today.

Do you guys know the difference between the 12AX7WAs and WBs?

So what you're saying is that the stock setup, designed by Bruce Fucking Egnater, sounds the best?! Holy shit! My mind. It is blown.

LOL. I did some preamp tube swapping around myself about a month ago, and in almost every case, the stock Sovteks sounded the best. Make sense to me, since Mr. Egnater designed the modules around those tubes! The only module that I do not have stock tubes in is the Erect - currently using GT-labeled JJ ECC83s there....but the stock Sovteks sound pretty sweet in that module also.

I actually thought the Sovteks were chosen mainly because of their consistency and reliability. I really like EH preamp tubes in my EG5.

We did not design around the Sovteks. Modules are designed around 2 12ax7's.
We use them because they are the most reliable, period.

Thanks Jeff! I have also learned the SED winged C El34s are very reliable in the Mod 50 head. I have run these solid for over a year and no issues.

Well, I tried JJs and a Mullard/EH in the EG5 and they sucked. Harsh and bbbbbbbbright!

In my testing the Sovs still sound by far the best and a buddy of mine did the same. All his Egnater modules sound best with sovs. Go figure. My MHG killed with EHs.

All the online tube stores say the Sovs are the economy brand and we should upgrade to Tung Sols, LOL.

So what did you design them around, if not Sovteks? Since 12ax7s are a type and not a brand, is there a particular brand you used when designing the amps, and then decided to use Sovteks b/c of their reliability (which I agree with, BTW...I've found them to be the most consistently reliable, especially in the last few years), or did you design them using whatever you had on hand (i.e. a variety of whatever brand of 12ax7s) and just 'landed' on Sovteks and have stuck with them ever since?
