Tried a Sovtek LPS in the PI slot. Sounds great.

Swapped out a chinese 12ax7b in my Quickrod 100 and put in a Sovtek LPS and it made the amp sound louder and clearer at the same settings. Pretty happy with the results. Anybody else try this tube in the PI spot.

I have them in the PI of all my amps
Me too except for a couple that have the new Mullard which looks pretty much identical side by side. They are pretty consistent at having good gain and good balance. Just don't use them (or pretty much any Russian 12AX7) in the cathode follower spot (V2 in Marshalls). They can often fail there. The Chinese are fine there.

Yeah. They are similar.

I like them in v1 too. I remember Bogner (Uber) used to ship with LPS in all positions except I think in v3 &v5 (cathode folleres) which were Chinese

Ok, in the Steavens Poundcake, (NOS Tungsrams in V1-V5) the LPS (in V6-PI) adds more of that ‘Huge Wizard Wallop’ flavor whereas a Telefunken / Yugo leans more in the Larry Dino ‘Fast Tight Laser-beam Kerrannng’ territory.

Both are great, just depends on what tone you are after.

On a side note, For years I just had Chinese Beijing Square getters in the Poundcake. The Tungsrams (in V1-V5) make a huge difference in this amplifier as opposed to some other amps I’ve owned, where the preamp tubes really didn’t matter as much.

The Tungsrams add tightness, upper mids and aggression to the amp.

I got one and use it as well in most amps although my latest setup prefers Chinese over The LPS for whatever reason. Definitely keeping the LPS though for other uses down the road.

I finally found a very strong and balanced Yugo / Telefunken, from a non-flakey seller. I have been looking for a few weeks now, as I want to try it in the PI slot of one of my Marshalls, but finding one with those 3 prerequisites proved harder than I thought it would be :cautious:.

I have used Tungsrams in the PI slot of most of my amps for years, with the occasional LPS in certain amps. Anxious to hear the results when it arrives, and was glad that this topic came up, to get some other opinions on what others have used.

I like the Tungsrams in V1-2 and the Tele or Yugo in PI…
Highly recommend you at least try👍

Pre-war Ei Yugo is my go to for V1. It's hard finding ones that aren't microphonic though, so they go in the PI when they are. Otherwise Sovtek LPS.

I have an RCA blackplate in there for my Rivera. Absolutely kills!! Long live the long plates!!!

I like yugos in V1+V3 of a marshall...
Chinese in V2...

If I had to choose another tube to throw into the other tube slots of a Marshall, there would be a Mullard for sure.

A LP in the PI spot will add warmth and bottom end to thin, shit sounding amps like WIZARDs.. LOL

I had a sovtek 12ax7LPS is definitely one of the best tubes in the PI socket. Used it for years. But a while back I decided to try a 12AT7 in my Splawn Nitro PI socket and I actually like it better. To my ears, the 12AT7 (Jan Phillips to be exact) took out that ear pearcy high end frequently that was introduced with the LPS.

Amp sounds cleaner and tighter too.

Cheers

In my vintage Marshalls I like a Tungsram or Ei in the PI spot. I have an LPS too but still prefer the other 2. In fact, I have all Tungsram loaded in my 72 super lead. That's how it came to me from England, with 4 Siemens 34s as well. Supposedly they are the original tubes, the owner fired it up once every 3 months or so since he bought it new in 1972.
