I had an Eggy Rebel 30 combo for about 6 weeks and loved the clean tone of that amp.
But, the dirty channel had VERY modest gain, barely what one can call "crunch".
I thought it was the way the amp is.
Then I tried a Metal Core pedal and it gave more gain, but the tone sounded flat and dull, no dynamics.
Hit the bright switch on and the volume actually increased and the tone got awful.
There is something wrong with it so I took it back to GC today.

They had a Renegade head so I thought I'd give it a try.
WOW. Completely different gain channel. VERY nice.
The clean channel is just as sweet as the Reb30 with all that colorful tube overtone, but the gain channel was actually quite impressive for a modest gain amp.
I was actually able to dial in a very cool heavy gain that could be used for Metal, although not as much as that ultra saturation that some meta amps have
It confirmed that my Reb30 was having issues.

So, I kinda swore off Egnater, but after hearing the Renegade heat I'm now considering a 1x12 combo.
Have any of you compared the combo to the head?
Are they using the SAME amp just in a different configuration, as one is in a combo and the other a head?
I'd hate to find out that that head actually has more gain on the dirty channel, cause I want that tone.

Also, does adding a boost, not distortion, pedal add nicely to the dirty channel giving it more touch sensitivity and/or a bit more saturation and sustain?

I also tried out a Vengeance head and it too was pretty nice, but I was VERY surprised that the Renegade can get nearly as much gain on the dirty channel. I'm thinking that a signal boost pedal on the dirty channel of the Renegade would put it right there with the Vengeance. Haven't tried the Armageddon and I'm sure that amp has destructive hot gain, at least that's what I've read. :)

TIA.

Yes. From everything I know, the 112, 212, 410, and head are all the same amp, just different configs. In fact, I can unplug the speakers from my 212 and use it as a head. I'm sure the 112 and 410 are the same way.

I'll be honest, there is quite a bit of gain available with the Renegade, but I've never considered it a "Metal" amp. Hard Rock? Yes. But not Metal - compared to specific Metal amps that are out there.

As for a clean boost, it will add more of what you're looking for, but I don't think, based on little I know about what you want, that you should buy the Renegade thinking that a clean boost would turn it into the amp for you. If it isn't what you need up front, I'd keep looking.

I love my Renegade though and never come close to using all of the gain it has available. I don't play modern Metal with it either though.

The only difference between the head and the combos is ...weight. Go with the head and cab, much easier to move around. Like hbucker said, it's not a metal amp but with a Bogner Red or the Uber pedals going through the clean channel might get you there.
