Trying to go ampless?

So since I have seen some really cool rigs here on rig talk from super complex, to mid size, and very simple ones I have been trying to build a rig that is right for me. I also played bass for a short time and learned about all the modern conveniences bass players have over guitarists. Fact is I am jealous of bass players because if they are going to a show with a half decent PA and a direct BOX like a Sans amp they have no need to bring an amp or a cab. Bass players don't have to rely on tone as much as guitar players do they can plug into the PA and if they have good finger tone is decent and they have an active EQ in their Bass then that's the rig. Guitar Players we have pedals, cabs, heads, cable everywhere heck sometimes 2 heads one for just cleans and the other just for distortion.
So here is the thing I would like to build a rig that is simple in one compact pedal board size I play metal mostly and this is all assuming I have a decent PA to work with. Where to start I am thinking some sort of direct box cab sim along with a decent distortion preamp I would really like to find one that does not sound like a can of Bee buzz I would like to stay away from the digital stuff 11rack Fractle Kemper ect: and keep it around 600 dollars maybe 700 all thoughts and opinions welcome.

I'd look at some AMT preamp pedals. I had a board with an AMT P1, MXR 10 band EQ, and EHX 44 Magnum. It sounded shockingly good. Of course that would be an all metal or rock all the time option but, AMT has a lot of choices.

The Torpedo C.A.B. might be worth looking into. It could be a cool combination with those AMT's.

That RK5 sounds nice ! So you just put it in front of a clean channel?
I have a 5153 50 and want a better option than the vypyr practice amp I have for home.

I got this a few weeks ago. I've been going direct into my pa and Iki d it. I haven't turned on my 5150 III since.

I have a similar pedal, the Tech 21 Fly Rig 5. It gets a fairly convincing plexi sound when going direct. I have it on my board along with a direct box.

I looked at and passed on the Fly Rig 5 a little while back because it didn't have enough gain. The Richie Kotzen version gets pretty dirty. I'm very interested in checking one out now.

Thanks for posting!

Playing Metal guitar means that you are ineligible for any kind of pedal that presents great tone.
If you want to lighten up, go with Kemper/Fractal. Otherwise get ready to carry some tube amps to get TONE

I have to disagree pretty strongly with this statement, at least in a band context. There are some amazing pedals that get you great metal tone in a band setting. Wampler Triple Wreck, Bogner Red, etc, sound great.

It's a different story if you want that full range, really low thumping chug (that incidentally doesn't work well with a band). Amps do that best, and if you are only playing at home, I agree tube amps or high-end modelers are the way to go.

Agree to strongly disagree on pretty much every point here
