So I was looking for some different tubes for my Marshall type amps and found what I was looking for. I had been using jj ec83s and sovtek 12ax7wb. the jj’s sounded too fizzy to me and the Sovtek - well I just thought I could do better lol. Here’s what worked in each amp, had a lot of fun!! And fyi when comparing tubes, I record so I can hear and a/b what I’m trying.
Blankenship 1987 - ended up with the Gold Lion 12ax7 Gold Pin in V1 and a China 12ax7 in v2, sovtek 12ax7wb in the pi. This gave a rounder tone, with a nice saturation with no fizziness.
Blankenship Masterplex - This amp has s darker by nature and the Gold Lion didn’t compliment that. I ended up with the jj ec83s mg - mid gain version - this brought this amp to life! It did add some nice top end sparkle without being fizzy or ice picky at all. Left the sovtex 12ax7wb in v2 and pi.
Ceriatone 2204 - Put a Gold Lion 12ax7 Gold Pin in v1, left sovtek 12ax7wb in v2 and pi. This gave the amp a nice saturation, no fizz, and a rounded top end that was very pleasant,
