Tube replacement recommendations for Rebel 20

Hi guys,

Wondering if anyone has some tube replacement recommendations for a Rebel-20? My pref is toward tones reminiscent of Trower or Gilmour, and not metal territory.

Thanks in advance!

Why? Is there something wrong with the set you have? Honestly, I wouldn't even categorize the Rebel as a "metal" amp. Trower is one of my favorite players...maybe leave the tubes alone and spend the cash on an MXR Phase 90 or a Deja Vibe.

I re-tubed my Rebel yesterday but only because I had a preamp tube go on me. I decided to order a complete set, Tung-Sol's for the preamp and 6V6's and JJ's for the EL84's. I never really bought into the "different tubes=different/better tone" idea but I am now a convert, a great sounding little amp is now even better. The character of the amp is still the same but it has more of everything than before, a kind of 3-D organic richness.

only having played it, I would bet tung sol pre's would do this amp some good and give it a tad more bight. I would stay away from JJ's pre's unless you want a smoother sound from it.

Thanks guys. I have one of the early Rebels, where as I recall the 12AX7s, 6V6s, and EL-84s are all JJs.

Search the thread "Rebel 20 - Came stock with JJ's instead of GT's?"

"The GT's were JJ's with the Gt logos only. We then stopped using GT because of their sale to Fender and the fact that the GT testing was not worth the cost in our minds. So they have ALWAYS been JJ"s in the power section and were JJ's at first in the pre amp but are now Sovteks." - Jeff Hilligan
