hey guys,

I'm planning a full re-tube for my Herbie, and I was looking for Peter's thread about "Diezel officially switched to 6550" that was a sticky here a while ago..I tried searching but I can't find it! Was it deleted? I thought there was some good info in there but maybe I'm mistaken since it's no longer available

I want to make the switch to 6550 and I figured I might as well swap the preamp tubes while I'm at it.
It seems clear that the SED =c 6550 is the way to go, but average distortion? or late distortion?
(I play heavy metal  )

Ruby preamp tubes? And is there a shop that have all these in stock? It seems Doug got sold out the minute he got his new shipment

i bought my set of new ruby tubes from http://www.cryoset.com
12ax7 Au5 HG+ for V1 and V2
12ax7 Au5 HG for the rest

good thing about them is that hey are cryo treated to make them for solid
of a tube and sound better

looks nice, but they don't seem to offer matched sextet of 6550!

Actually you don't need a matched sextet. Three pairs will do since you can bias them pairwise.

silly me, didn't even think of that
do I need anything else? or just pop out the EL34's and in with the 6550's...I have heard of some people changing 'retainers' when switching to KT77 or 88, do I need this or will I be fine without ?

Just spread the existing retainers out on the Herbie or pop them off. Trust me, they are a pain to change and you don't need them. Just retubed mine with SED 6550's in 1-6, 2-5 and left 34's in the inner pair. 6550's biased to about 95. When you change them out, turn the bias trim all the way to the left before turning the amp on, otherwise the bias will be well out of range and the 6550's will heat up in a hurry. A short curly to the right will get you in the right range. The trim pot is very sensitive with the 6550's.

As for preamp tubes, you can experiment. I just went through a few variations. V4-V6 really don't matter, just keep the existing tubes. I had some new SOVTEK LPS's laying around and ended up with them in V1-V3. I never thought it possible, but Herbie ended up with loads more girth and depth with the combination.

I am also looking for the tube thread. Does anyone recall specifically what power/pre tubes Diezel is using in the Herberts now.

Thanks!
