Tung Sol 5881!!!

Those are great tubes as are the Svetlana 6550s. Probably the most popular tubes for the Mod50 on this board are TS 5881s, Svetlana 6550s, GT E34L's, TS EL34B's, and SED =C= EL34s.

You know, for budget tubes that sound pretty darn good, I have a pair of Sovtek 5881/6l6's that I got from Tube Depot for like $22 a pair. Not the WXT's, but they sound darn good. But as Eric noted above, his list seems to capture most of the "fave's" of the guys on here.

That's what makes these damn amps so much fun........and poorer as well!!

The stock Sovtek's that it come with sound good..I was surprised.

Here's my choice, although it does depend on cab:

EL34 type
GTEL34M (6ca7) - killer sounding EL34, closely followed by either the SED=C= or the Ruby El34BSTR. TS EL34B I had were 'ok(ish)' ,,, sounded like a JJ EL34L to me.

KT88/6550(Thro' my 4x12)
Genalex Gold Lion KT-88 re-issue....
Second place = Ruby KT-88
Distant third = JJs..altho' I think these are made in same factory as the Ruby's...maybe I need to pay attention to tube parameters more closely...these were too boomy and loose.
Svet 6550 (surprised me too)...then the Tung Sol

I found that with my Randall 2x12, most 6550/KT-88s produced an overwhelming amount of low end.

6L6/5881
This is a difficult one as I like JJ 6L6, Sovtek 5881 and TS 5881 all for different reasons.
Sovtek 5881 = sounds neutral enough to be good with almost everything
TS 5881 = has lower headroom and much sweeter sounding than the Sovtek...can lack balls compared to the Sco and the:
JJ 6L6 = I keep coming back to this tube..just seems to treat the high gainers really well and most of my modules are high gain.
It's worth mentioning the Ruby 6L6GC-MSTR...what I've had of 'em sound great but have had two pairs killed in transit in two seperate amps :(

Others
JJ KT-77 ... whatever amp I put these in, I enjoy it for the first 20 mins and then somehow they fatigue my ear quickly.
JJ 6v6 - great low power tube but always find it lacking something and making stuff sound a little harsh

THD YJS Triodes w/EL84
Creamy smooth and wonderful...seems to have quite enough balls for rhythm playing too...sadly I think mine have a problem and I daren't plug 'em in anymore :-(

If you're wanting either the GL KT-88 or TS 6550...check the classifieds :D

Try a set of G12K100's in that 2x12 combo...then use the Svet 6550s...you won't be disapointed...or a set of G12T75 and CL80 combo..

The Svets sound killer it's true

Current setup is Vet30/ET-65...was v30/G12t75 (which was even more bass and fizz..lol). I'm thinking of going 2xET-65

I am surprised the TS EL34s didn't work out for ya. I thought they were a nice step up from the SED=C=EL34s tubes. Both are nice though. GTs seem too pricey so I tend to skip those.

Someteimes I wonder about the consistency about any of these tubes! You sense a slight lack of balls with the 5881s, while Matt prefers tham for their balls. Me, I find them fairly nuetral, but not as much fun as EL34s. ;)
