Hi everybody,

I know this is an ofen discussed topic and i am sorry for bringin it up again.

I have an 2 months old VH4 ( new owner and family member  ) and i am thinking of changing the tubes. The VH4 has 6L6 build in.

I play Metallica,Down,Pantera ( i know Dime used to play solid state before switchting to Krank), Black Sabbath, Machine Head, Slayer and so on.So real Heavy stuff....

Can you recommend me good tubes?

I am thinking of Ruby 12AX7AC5HG+ for V1 and V2 and 12AX7AC5HG in the preamp section
and 6550 or EL34 maybe EL34L in the power section

Cheer and greetz from Germany

do you buy them from overseas or is their finally a shop in gemrany/europe where we can get them?

maybe EL34L in the power section

do yourself a favour and stay away from the E34L (JJ), you will save a lot of money, i had 4 pairs of them, and none of them lasted longer than 3 months, the last one lasted for exactly 10 hours, and made then the fuses explode, right on stage.

if either 6550 or EL34 - for both types i can recommend the SED/Svetlana Winged Cs. i am currently running the Winged C 6550 in my Herbert and am fully satisfied!!

Well i think that i should get them here in Germany,,,i don´t know i have to check that...

10 Hours is ridicoulus...Thank you for your quick reply

What do you think which tubes should i get for my kind of music taste?

i havent found yet a store in DE or AT selling the Ruby ...5HG(+) :(
if you find one please let me know!

to be honest - i'm not sure, either EL34 or 6550 will do fine! with the EL34 you will have more of a "low-mid-honk", the 6550 have a more "balanced" sepctrum of freqs, there is, to my ears, no specific freqeuncy extremely pronounced - some may call it more "sterile" sounding. i think the 6550 fit the Diezels very well, as in comaprison to the EL34 they also have a good high-end/treble range, which is what to my ears fits the Diezels very well as they are pretty dark sounding, so a bit more high-end can never be wrong.

check also this thread for a comparison: viewtopic.php?f=14&t=64348

EDIT: for what its worth - i play pretty similar styles as you, also with my main band, we play technical deathmetal - there the 6550 fit a bit more than the EL34. imho, as more "classical" metal you play, the more the EL34 fit in. but thats just my taste!

imo...i would go with SED Winged C 6550s or Gold Lion KT77s. really brought the amp to life IMO. I liked the 34s...just loved the others wayy more. good luck!!

As you are living in F.a.M. you might try to contact ACY in Aschaffenburg - he might be able to check out different Tubes in your Amp, i think he has a few in his shop and I'm pretty sure he can order what you want.

I changed from six EL34 to six SED "C" 6550's in my Herbert and liked them a lot.
Now I decided to mix them and have 4 SED "C" 6550s with 2 EL34s and I am totally satisfied
For me thats exactly the right mix of clarity and a little bit midrange-growl ^^

Unfortunately mixing tubes in a vh4 is not possible

I like =C= 6550s a lot in my VH4.
I think they compliment the preamp voicing quite well.
