Cool riff idea, even cooler solo idea, but yeah if the main riff isn't played primarily with downstrokes maybe it would sound more even that way?

Yeah, I was playin around with my Fortin-modded JMP-1 preamp, and stumbled upon a setting that seemed to work well with some drop C# riffs, so I hit record.

These are my "riff tapes" as we used to call them back when all we had was a Tascam Porta 5 to record ideas before they were forgotten.

I add some context with a drum track and some layered guitars.

Cool! I would try and double that guitar track with a slightly different tone to beef if up a little

Yeah, that's alternate picked tho'

No way I would (or could) play that riff with all downstrokes.

it might be worth woodshedding until you can - that's part of why it's a little uneven with the chugs, if I'm parsing what's being played correctly

Obviously the triplets etc would be alternate, but the main chug seems like it would be one of those riffs that alternate picking would make it more difficult than it needs to be

Kind of like master of puppets, it doesn't sound "right" alternate picked, like it doesn't have enough aggression

I always think about those old Jimmy Page tapes that came out on YouTube where he's writing riffs..

One great example was how "Hots On For Nowhere" started. Blew my mind !

It was really just him and Bonham fleshing out the drum pattern and the picking sequence. Sounded nothing like the finished riff.

If I posted all my "riff tape" recordings the entire clip sub forum would be inundated 😂

Obviously a drummer like Bonham is going to influence anyone's riffs, and fleshing them out into something more than they were before

Honestly though, good drummers are rare and creative drummers are almost extinct

Post it.

I'm always looking to steal learn something new.

Oh God no way

it already annoys me that no one listens to any stuff on the clip sub forum - some of the regulars admitted they didn't even know it existed a couple days ago

It already irritates me when someone like fagnorris or Steve is all "WELL LETS HEAR YOU PLAY THEN" and I have literally dozens of tracks, show and practice videos of bands I've been in, and a million other things

Things is.. 1 out of 10 asinine, trolling responses across all the remaining guitar forums - that are always coming from angry losers who cannot play for shit - will get me a real gold nugget of recording wisdom out of some old codger who has worked in a studio and actually knows WTF he's talking about.

Its funny I worked in a studio for years

But more than trying to impart advice about anything I learned, I really appreciate the advice I've received from other RTers about recording - medic has given me some killer tips especially
