I'm looking to pickup a small amp but around the 15-20w range. I play mostly rock stuff. I tried the Tiny Terror twice and can't quite bond long term. I think I'm done with Blackstar and selling my ht-5. So I've narrowed it down to these two, Egnater Tweaker or Vox Night Train. I'd include the Traynor Dark Horse but can't find one and haven't heard a real decent demo yet anyway.

Someone said the Egnaters run dark, maybe that was the Rebel. Clearly the Vox is bright but the thick setting sounds like it gives some juice.

Opinions? Other options in the under $400 range?

I had rebel 20 but got rid of it after a month. I've never played the night train. Same some money and check out the dual terror. The fat channel is very good.

I have the Tweaker and really like it. I sold a HT5 to get it and initially missed the 80's hair vibe that I could get out of it. I tossed a MXR 10 band out front of the Tweaker and did not miss the HT5 anymore.

The Tweaker takes pedals well and has a huge amount of tones that can be dialed in. With some combinations of straight into the amp, boosts, or the EQ, I have been jamming to Gov't Mule, Ratt, Dokken, AIC, and Tool. I am hoping to sell an amp this week and pick up a Q3 to make some clips.

do you need an efx loop?
Need? No, but it would be nice.

After doing some additional reading I think I'm going to pass on the Vox. Mesa studio 22? I'll take a look. I had a Subway Blues that was a neat amp but a little noisy.

I really liked the clean and semi drive sounds on the Tweaker. sounded really great to me, has an efx loop, and several switches to help shape your sound. What I didn't love was the high gain sound, it was nice, but not for what I would use it for, or like to use high gain for.

Vox, better as a pedal platform imo since it has no efx loop.

I wonder how the tweakers bigger brother will sound, if any, difference in voicing.

Tweaker no doubt. I compared the 2 last weekend and the Tweaker came home with me. I had a Rebel 20 and it was a huge disappointment, but I love this Tweaker.

Its not an amp that you can sit down with and quickly find a good high gain sound. You really need to spend alot of time with it. But those sounds are definately in there. The cleans and dirty crunches are much easier to dial up.

I have owned the Tiny Terror, a Matamp XV, Blackstar HT-5, and the Rebel 20. The Tweaker is easily my favorite.

It is pretty dark, but I run the "bright" on and use G12H30's and its fine. I have also read about problems with the loop.........supposedly not jiving with the MXR Carbon Copy. However, I have no issues at all with my CC in the loop. Maybe that problem was fixed or something. Regardless, I just don't hear what people were complaining about.

I felt the same way at first. The trick was to add the EQ out front. I use it to cut the low and low mid freq's and now I get killer AIC, Tool, and 80's heavy rock tones punishing my cabs. The Tweaker has a huge gainy tone to it so it can muddy up when trying to cop some heavier tones. Cut those freq's down a bit and it just screams. Turn off the EQ and you are back to Gov't Mule in a small package.

Yeah

I just personally don't like amps where you "need" to add stuff just to make it sound right for you, ya know. But I guess since the price is so nice for the sound, its not so bad.

I had the Tweaker for 3 weeks and now have a Traynor Dark Horse - I love this DH amp! The tone is amazing - bass is much more responsive than the Tweaker. I play a wide mix from jazz to gritty blues with a warm overdrive to super clean nylon string classical stuff to acoustic - this amp sounds fantastic with all of the styles. I can even get a heavy overdrive (not really my style, but it is available if needed).

The Tweaker really seemed weak when I compared these two amps side by side - straight in with no effects. I could get a solid Twin type of low end with the Trayner that was crisp and clear - The Tweaker sounded flappy on the low end and I couldn't get the same tone dialed in. I wanted to stay with the Egnater Tweaker because it was cheaper and had a bunch of options to mold the tone - it is a good amp, but the Dark Horse won out in the end. If you can find one, play it for a while and see if you like it.

I like the Night Train much better than the Tweaker. I thought the Night Train was way ballsier.
