So after modding my amp a few months ago to my own specs with Reinhold, he suggested I try 6550's in the amp.

At first I didnt like it, but after my first show with the kt88's, I switched to the 6550's and it made things even better.
1st show was a place with an echoey cement floor. Made things too bright.
The 6550's thickened things up, added more girth to the tone, and made it a little more meaner. 2nd show, another cement floor, but this time it worked!

Didn't even bias it, just popped them in and away we went.

Try 6550's if you get a chance and want something different before modding the amp to el34's.

What did he modded in the amp for you?
How do they differ from the KT88's?

34's work well, but I'm sure 6550's are killer in there. KT88's were too glassy for me.

What 6550's did you go with?

I put these together from today's rehearsal.

however, I do NOT know why every video I uploaded is out of sync on Youtube tonight!

I'll probably replace these eventually, but figured you might want to hear.

sorry it's low volume, it was the 1st part of our set and I was not loud enough apparently...but I turned up later, then the Zoom died. so...you get what you get.
TJ, modded, like I said, and with 6550's, winged "c"s i believe. very thick now.

For reference, this video was shot when I first got the amp, and was stock with the stock KT88's.

And the mod I had done, was initially modeled after this amp i was lent, that belonged to a very current modern band, and i took their mods, and then made my own, more aggressive, and tighter, along with the bass tighter as well. more thrashy, overall.
but this was what it started off as...a little tinny to me, but more open...

Thanks for the clips. Sounds great. You still digging the changeover?

I would love a Twin Jet but I can't get past not having a clean channel. :(

I tend to favor the more Marshally Bogners that have clean channels since we don't do metal.....we do more classic rock to heavy rock.

Not sure what to think, I love how thick and big sounding the TJ is and I hear it is just amazing with KT77s! For covers we do a lot of Rush, Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, STP, AIC, Tool, Foo Fighters, Creed, and things like that. Original music is more classic rock meets 80s metal meets 90s hard rock. With my jam buddies it is mostly classic rock and hard rock.

I love the TJ tones I hear I just don't know if the amp can be tamed for classic and hard rock. I thought about getting rid of my new reborn Dual Rectifier to get a Twin but I don;t think anything sounds as aggresive as a Dual Rec so it is nice having that available....plus it is super versatile in that it will cover anything from 60s and 70s rock to modern metal and do it well.

How are you getting along with your Diezel(s)? More and more seems I'm hearing that both VH4 and Herbert are awesome stand-alone but don't cut in a band mix. Thoughts? Is this why you're using the TJ, or just more experimentation?

Actually, only used the vh4 once with the band.
It was ok, and sounded very very good, sat incredibly well in the mix.
But I wasted something bolder, which this is.
Who knows, next week I could be all about my new Metal Friedman machine. Should have it next week or so, in time for an upcoming gig on the 25th.

Custom metal machines!

You have some killer gear.

Now that I've added the bias switch to allow EL34's and KT88's in my Twin Jet, I'm curious about the 6550 to complete the trifecta. What advantages/disadvantages does the 6550 offer in the Twin Jet?

Found out myself. The 6550's are great tubes in the Twin Jet. They really have nicer mids and highs like the EL34s and tighter lows like KT88's. So far the best overall tube I've had in here. BTW I'm using Tung-sol 6550's biased at about 38ma.
