Hey gang.
Got an Uberschall.
Love it.
except for....
The very high end frazzel, gritty thing.
Ideas to tame it down?

Stock tubes pulled.
sed winged C's el 34's in, dialed up to 24.4 ma (how hot can you go?)

EH 12ax7 eh, v1 (warm it up just a lil bit)
Tong sol reissues 12ax7's for the rest.

any ideas, thoughts, mods?

thanks in advance.

Here's a good way to make your uber sound a bit better right away - keep your master volume cranked all the way up, and then use the volume controls for each channel to set your overall volume.

That's biased a bit cold- I have mine at 30mA. And definitely crank the master volume. What speakers you using it with?

Ive got different tubes in mine...E34L, Chinese 12AX7s. However, one thing you might try is to turn the treble all the way down, and turn up the mids and presence. The uberschall eq is really strange, but very effective at shaping a ton of different sounds.

I must have strange preferences regarding treble i guess. I like the high end sizzle of the uber. To me it adds edge, but stays smooth. My dual rec, on the other hand, can get harsh if not dialed in just right.

Yeah I love the high end sizzle of the uber as well.
I think it's an integral part from how the amp sounds though..

thanks for the insights gents.
Will bring up the bias a tad and MV trick.
I use the FX loop, see how that will go or against the FX in the loop.

Speakers, a pair of late 90's celestion 75's and a pair of early 80's celestion 65's in an old marshall 4x12 angled cab.
The bogner cab sounds killer.... ($)
Might have to swap out the 65's for a pair of WGS V30's.
Not a fan of the celestion V30's, but the WGS's sounded very good.

I like some sizzle as well (old marshall guy here)
but the upper cheese grater frizzel fry gets me after a bit....

Which rev Uberschall and what are your current amp settings?

Mega important, thanks for asking this.

If it's an EL34 based head, you can usually get them up to 32mA no sweat.

Let us know the model/revision.

Yep. IIRC you can push it to 35mA, but that's about the limit. I just don't like mine pushed that hard. I think Bogner recommends 28mA.

A lower biased bottle in the Uber will give it more snarl and a bit less compression. 28mA to 30mA is safe, it gets juicy and saturated when up around 32mA. Also pends on the bottles used.

My TJ Uber - that I had and regret selling - was KT88s and there was NO need for worrying about biasing those puppies. All the tone was from the preamp. Wouldn't want to hear what KT88s sound like "pushed" :aww:

I might try a bit lower, like the 28mA. I'm trying to get a bit less compression with my Rev 2. And you're right, the Twin Jet doesn't need to be pushed in any way. It's just massive as it is.

Thanks for the replies Gents.
It is a rev. Blue, brand new.
since I installed a new set of SED c wings, I have tweeked the bias, and like what I am hearing at 24.7 ish.
I have pushed up farther, but it got a lil squishy for my taste.
The 24+ on the last tube sounds excellent.

I also re tubed the preamps with some NOS military GE 12ax7's and Amperex.
Major difference, up the bar on note definition and articulation. Most of the Harsh went away.
I also have a trio of NOS RFT's en route to try in there as well... Looking forward to those,
My previous experience with RFT's have been always good.

It is a great Amp, I am enjoying it very much. Just what I wanted out of a two channel amp and then some.

Most of the harshness (or sizzle if you like it) can be attributed to Chinese preamp tubes.

Well, as an update,
I pony'd up for a Uberschall cab the other day.
GC gave me a good deal on some of my used stuff that was not selling, put it towards a cab.

yup, there it is.
Head and cab is a must.

Congrats man! I think the uberkab really goes great with the uberschall.

Agreed. I've tried both Ubers with all V30 cabs and it came across harsh. The 75s in the mix soften things up a bit.

I have tried and patient with what cabs I already have,
and was ready to pony up on some speakers, etc.
to get close to an Uber cab, but, in the long run I was just kidding myself and wasting time.
the two together is meant to be, a package deal to optimize the heads potential.
Now I just have to rid of my other cabs...
