Just curious,

Mine was JJE34L power & all Sovtek LPS except V5 which was a Groove Tube of some kind

I feel a bit worried about this Sovtek LPS Cathode follower stages thing… even tho i’ve kept my amp 100% stock from factory

^ i posted in James Peters thread. I talked to Bogner today about the Sovtek LPS tubes. The cathode follower positions have chinese tubes (v3 and v5 for the Uber and v3 and v4 for the XTC)

You may want to give them a call just to check - but that is what the guy told me. Charlie was his name.

Keep us posted on what you find out when you call.

I checked my XTC. It has Sovtek LPS in v1, v2, v5 and v6. Chinese in v3 and v4 - just like the Bogner guy said.

maybe i'll just chuck a chinese in my uber's V3 and be done with it

the V5 is already a groove tube of some kind

I got so carried away with power tubes hat I forgot about preamp tubes. So what exactly I need to get for my Uber?

The fact that you didn't realize you "needed" to change out any of the preamp tubes should be a giant, flashing, red, neon sign that you actually don't "need" to put anything different in there.

If you are thinking that something must be changed just because you read it, here, on the forum, then you need a slap in the face. No offense or anything. :)

You don't need to put anything new in there. If they are the stock tubes, they are fine, unless you are unhappy with their performance.

I know people who spend lots of money to swap out the stock transmission fluid in their cars for "high performance" synthetic brands. But none of them "knew" they had to until someone on a car forum told them. Because nothing was wrong with the original stuff to begin with...

Pretty bad analogy considering that synthetic fluid is proven that it lubricates better, cleans better, and can withstand heat better than conventional oils. This, in turn, will help prolong the life of whatever part that oil is lubricating. Also, most synthetic brands are about the same price as conventional oils now-a-days, so to not run synthetic is fairly imprudent. There's also a myth that synthetic fluid causes oil leaks. In reality, those oil leaks were there all along. Instead, the synthetic fluid just cleaned out all the built up carbon that was surrounding the leak, so an otherwise unknown leak will be spotted.

Now...what were we talking about again? :D

That's a great story, but I don't find it quiet true. No offense or anything. :)

When you play a tube amp your tone gradually gets worse & your ears adjust to the new sound. I think switching preamp tubes on an overly saturated amp like Uber can be an eye opener. Maybe I'm wrong, but I'll never know until I actually change them.

When I had my Uber, I put all new 9th gen chinese in the preamp. I liked the sound. Why not try what Bogner is using stock now. Sovtek LPS in all positions except v3 and v5 - chinese in those.

that's exactly what i did last night! :D

V5 already had a groove tube which looked like a re-branded chinese tube

I put a C9 in V3... amp still sounds great

To be honest, i didn't notice a difference in sound when swapping the V3 tube
