Uberschall vs. XTC

I know the XTC has one of the greatest mid-gain channels around (IMO) and I hear the Uber has one of the most brutal channels out there.

My question is this......How capable is the Uber of doing mid-gain, classic hard rock? I hear Rev.2 has a bit better gain taper. I'm really curious about the Uber, but I don't want a one trick pony (like the Engl Fireball which was horrible at mid gain).

The other question is how brutal can the XTC get ? I always use a boost if that matters.

What I'm looking for is something that can give me a good low gain channel (similar to CH3 of the Engl Blackmore) and a saturated, modern channel for the heavy stuff (similar to the Fireball but looser). I never really got into CH4 of the Blackmore.

Or would I be better off with the Engl SE ???

Uber is indeed one trick pony. If you need some versatility look elsewhere.

I'd say check Diezel Herbert. XTC may be the shit for you too. Go & play both & decide for yourself.

I did'nt have that hard of a time dialing in some nice overdriven tones on the Uber I played.

Well I've played blues with Uber too & it sounded better than many other amps, but still there are a lot nicer choices for that.

I really only liked my Uber for metal. I used and OD on the clean channel for mid-gain stuff, but it wasn't the greatest. I'm going to check out an Ecstasy tomorrow. It may be my next amp. Right now, I have an SE and Herbert right now and both amps are awesome. They can cover the full spectrum of tones and each has a very disticnt voicing. The Herbert channel 2+ mode is the best mid-gain channel I've ever played. Channel 2- mode is incredible with a boost. If you ever make down to San Antonio, you are welcome to check my amps out.

Thanks. I might get a chance to play an XTC in a few weeks. I'm thinking that may be my ticket since I rarely play really heavy modern stuff. But I would like the amp to approximate that sound if I needed it.

They are two very different amps with little to no overlap. I've owned both at the same time, and I recently sold the Uberschall. The Uber will always sound like an Uber, and in theory you could really dial down the gain to try and play some lighter stuff, but I wouldn't use the amp for that. I loved my Uber, but it really wasn't terribly versatile. The XTC will not get the super low end massive wall of distortion the Uber will. However, the XTC will get pretty nasty.
