So are any of you guys gigging in clubs/bars etc getting a 1099 from them? Just got an email from one of the places we play asking if they should put the 1099 in the name of our band, what our tax id is etc? Or just who's name we want the 1099 in and a Social Security number.

I have a friend that is an accountant and I can ask him this afternoon how to handle this. But, I wanted to ask those with experience in semi-pro weekend bands like me if you've ever encountered this and how to handle it. I mean, were not an LLC or partnership etc and I don't know of any local bands that would even go through motions to even establish it. Band members come and go.

wow. that sucks.

Just take cash in the future?

You'll probably have to pay it yourself and take up a collection from the band? :aww:

hopefully it doesn't bump you into a higher bracket.

At least you can deduct gear purchases now.

+1, you will be able to find more than enough expenses to take care of that misc income.

First I'd look to see how much in total they are claiming that they paid your band. For me, that $ amount would dictate how I asked them to report the compensation.

I thought there was a minimum you could make as an independent contractor before you had to report it? Like $600 a year or so? Maybe I'm crazy. I don't know.

you, sir, are correct

The gigs we've done there have only totaled 1200 bucks and yes they paid us in cash each time. They have several bands in and out of there to play so I guess they want to maximize their return at the end of the year.

Talking with my drummer and his accountant this morning we've got it sorted out for now. Our drummer is self employed and files a Schedule C every year. So he decided that he will provide the venue with his name with his social for the 1099. Our drummer in turn will 1099 me and our bass player. We all have purchased enough equipment this year to offset any taxes so I'm relieved.

Just getting that email from the venue kinda freaked me out a little. It's really going to be interesting to see what the rest of the venues do to us. If more venues hit us with 1099's we've just decided to do a SS-4 form and get our own tax id number for next year. What a bitch though. We had about 30 gigs last year after getting together in June. We're doing a demo cd for our press kit next month and we expect more than double the gigs from last year this year. So, maybe getting a tax id is not such a bad idea. We'll see how this year goes.

They hire you to work there-repearedly so yes it's normal to get a 1099.
I dunno about putting it on a SS#, since in our case the band has a tax ID. And then the members get theirs from the band.
