I thought I the perfect AB/Y set up for my Herbert and VH4. First plug to the Input of the VH4 and the Thru to the Herbert. Then, I hooked up my Columbus to my Herbert using the XLR out and to my VH4 using the MIDI out (7 PIN MIDI cable).

All the patches on the first Bank change the VH4 to Channel 1 and turns on the Mute while the Herbert changes to one of its three channels and plays. All the patches on the second Bank have both the VH4 and Herbert on one of each of their respective channels and playing. All the patches on the third Bank change the Herbert to Channel 1 and turn on the Mute while the VH4 changes to one of its four channels and plays. So Bank 1 plays Herbert, Bank 2 plays both amps and Bank 3 plays VH4.

The problem…

The VH4 is very noisy when I do this. Is it bad to use both MIDI outs at the same time - maybe because both amps are providing phantom power to the MIDI pedal (that way I can use either amp while the other is off too)? If not, is there something I can do to control the noise - besides another noise gate?

There is no noise when I just use the XLR to the Herbert and then a 5 pin MIDI cable from the MIDI Thru to the VH4. I'd like to have a separate MIDI controllable effects unit for both amps - so I don't want my MIDI Thru on the Herbert to go to the VH4 if its not necessary.

Remove the phantom power on the VH4:

It´s pin 1/6 and pin 3/7.

Or cut it from the midi cable.

Or use the midi thru on the Herbert.
