Hey guys,

This may be something and nothing but I have noticedd with my vh4 that when playing across all channels, in order to get a good volume match I'm having to run the channel volumes on ch 3&4 higher than 1&2. For example if I'm happy with my volume on ch 2 set at 11 o'clock I will need to set ch 3 at about 1 o'clock or higher to get an equivalent volume match when switching channels.

This may be the way the amp should be but I'd thought I'd post just for clarification! The gain on ch3 is never over 12 so I don't think I'm compressing the channel too much at all, also I have tried this straight in with no effects in the chain and its the same.

Also, just one final question. I have checked on the forum but read conflicting things, the pre amps are v1 - v7 left to right when standing in front of the amp???

Manny thanks for any advice!!!

Im curious as well as I have similar situation. Channel volumes on channel 3 and 4 need to be higher than channel 2. The amp sounds normal and as far as I remember it has always been this way (I bought the amp new in 2006).

V1 is the closest to input.

are you kidding us? that is no issue. that's what channel volumes are for... to even out the different guitars with their different pickups, the different stompboxes in between and the different tastes and playing techniques of the guitar player.

if it was 7 o'clock on channel 2 volume and 5 o'clock on channel 4 to even the volumes.... then there would be an "issue". i think you are / the amp is fine with your settings

Mine is the opposite. I need to run channel volumes higher on channel 1 and 2 to get me the same volume as on 3 and 4. Not an issue though... That's what those knobs are there for.

Just a note on perceived volume...a channel with more mids/highs and less bass will "appear" to be louder than a channel with less mids/highs and more bass.

Isn´t this because the clean and cleaner channels are more dynamic than the distorted?

It's about compression. On diezel more gain=more compression. It's not that you're over compressing it's that each channel has progressively more compression.

Solution: Set each volume to taste and rock out!!

Thanks for the replies guys!

It was more for piece of mind that I asked. I'll get it set it to 2 then rock out.......... Well maybe 11  yes!

I have had this "problem"- if you will call it that- on several multi-channel amps. It is very normal. The clean channels "drive" or get louder in decibels a lot easier than the "heavier" channels. Nothing to be alarmed about. This is why there are individual volumes AND a master volume.
Going from clean to ultra-distorted is always weird because of how clean the clean channels can be, but I have had some amps before that just sounded awful when switching (you could really hear the fizziness of the heavier channels). It doesn't get better than a Diezel in terms of single heads with multiple channels.

I don't think it's truly a "problem". Things to note:
- bedroom level compression and gain
- live setting compression and gain
- bedroom level mids
- live setting mids

I bring these esoteric notions up because what we think we hear at lower volumes changes dramatically at higher volumes. Case in point - place Ch volumes all at 11 o'clock, gain at noon, MV at, oh, I dunno, say 10 o'clock. Now, with the exception of Ch.1 which will always be a bit quieter, Ch.2, Ch.3 and Ch.4 should track with a mic at the same 'levels' across the board, with the peak hit on Ch.2 maybe hitting the red zone off the bat only due to its immediacy.

I always check it with a mic set up if I think "I'm hearing things". The mic and track doesn't lie when it's on a screen

I know I know!! pick me pick me!!!

TO BALANCE THE VOLUMES BETWEEN CHANNELS!!!

What do I win?!?!

Like I said, it was more so for piece of mind as if everyone had said they should be equally balanced etc..... I would be thinking possibly something wrong with the amp which is the last thing I want.

Thanks again.

I'll continue to take the ridicule, ha! :D

I see you're from scouseland. I'll ask you one of the first questions a fellow musician asked me on my first visit there. Are you red or blue?

My old band went on UK tour with a band from there.
