Hi there can someone help me please. I have just bought a VH4 and i'm getting no sound at all. Its definetely hooked up correctly (and the mute button isn't on!!). If i turn the master volume and the channel volume up full i can just about hear it faintly. Please, please help me, its the first time i turned it on and i'm panicking a bit (cost me a load of dough). I live in the UK and would appreciate any advice.

Thanks Kevin

Well, the easiest place to start is with the basics. Check the following simple setup, with no effects in front of the amp or in the loop.

1. Speaker cab connected to proper output (4, 8, or 16 Ohm) in the back
2. Guitar connected to Input jack in the front
3. Set all channel volumes and gains to 9:00 position
4. Master volume to 9:00 position
5. Power ON
6. After 30 seconds, Standby ON
7. Check the rear of the amp. Are any of the LEDs on? If so, a power tube and its corresponding fuse need to be replaced.

Otherwise, you should hear something at this point. If not, I'm sure others here can help.

1. Stay cool
2. Don´t panic
3. Read Guitaroberts post

yep, tried that, still no luck, any more help please?

Try replacing v-1 preamp tube or swapping it out with a tube from the fx loop.

Hi Kevin,

plug your axe into the serial return and crank the master. Any louder sounds then?
(to check, if the poweramp is working correctly - if yes, next check for the preamp - if no: check power tube fuses . . .)

Please report

I had that problem once and it was just a pre-amp tube. don't worry these amps are like tanks (but tubes ain't)

i got my amp to my amp tech. he said a couple of pre amp valves had broke when it was shipped, and then when i turned it on it burnt out a resistor inside? He fixed it, and now a week later it has just started making a scratching noise (like a microphone being rubbed on your t-shirt) over the top every now and again. It happens on all the channels. Anyone got any ideas (peter????). Starting to get a bit worried that i have bought a lame duck here as all i keep getting is problems with it.

Could be a cold solder joint, courtesy of the tech that fixed the amp. --I'd also want to check out the remainder of the preamp tubes because if a couple of them were broken in transit, the amp got knocked around hard enough to possibly damage other tubes as well.

Guys, it is coming out of the repairers tomorrow. Apparently another valve was damaged and a couple of resistors along with the valve attachment apparently. I really hope this solves the problem but ill keep you all posted, thanks for all your help and advice.

Don´t take me wrong, but my relationship to techs
is not the best. They will tell You a lot of things.
I don´t have seen the "bad resistors" so I don´t
can tell You, if that´s true.

Sorry, I have nothing but bad experiences with techs.

Not much else i can do though really. He didn't say the resistors were bad, he just said that one burnt out when i turned it on because of the broken preamp valves. This is the only guy i know, If this doesn't solve the problem can you recommend somewhere or someone over here Peter?

I agree, finding a good one that knows amps quite well is a tricky thing. Most of them seem to be the type that smoke their profits up in their bongs, and then work on your amp. --Find somebody that has military experience with electronics, --a lot of military electronic backup systems use tubes, and must be regularly maintained.

hi guys, amp is up and running again, i am keeping all my fingers and toes crossed that it will continue to do so. By the way Peter, this thing sounds the nuts!!!

Hi guys, new problem with my VH4. (Peter please help me, this thing is doing my head in, it needs proper looking at by someone who understands this specific amp, i'm sure of it).

Its all working fine if used normally, but as soon as i try to use the channel inserts, or especially the send and return loops in anyway, the amp either crashes and the midi freezes, makes a horrendous buzzing noise which over powers the signal, pops like crazy, the effects don't work,or does some other weird thing. Any ideas (i have checked leads, tried various effects etc etc). It worked for about 5 minutes intermittently, then that was it.

I think i might cry, im gigging on thursday with no effects!!!!!?????

Is uwe in the USA, i am in the UK. Could it be a simple case that one of the fx loop tubes is gone? The amp works fine, as long as you don't put anything in the back. the channel inserts work but are extremely noisy and pop as well (which seems to be normal after scouring this forum for an answer). I was using the send 2 loop so i could program it to my midi board, but now it just makes horrendous noise, as soon as you unplug the leads out of the back, everything is fine again. Peter i love your amp dude, please tell me this is repairable. My tech seems pretty good, he used to build amps for hank marvin (the brand was kcp), but not sure how up he will be with the real techy stuff. By the way Peter, he said your amp was built beautifully and that he was really happy to see someone still building amps the way they should be made.

Also, is it possible to get a complete schematic diagram for the vh4, or is that top secret?? I just thought it might make things easier for my tech if its possible he can fix it?
