I run my VH4 in my home and was thinking of pulling one of the fuses out of the power tube sets to see what would happen. I am hoping that this will lower the overall wattage of the amp, and allow me to overdrive the pre-amp configuration hotter at lower volumes.

1. Is this a good idea?
2. Any concerns that I should be aware of?
3. Does doing this only drop one set of power tubes and continue to run all pre-amp tubes?
4. There are two fuses, does it matter which one that I pull.
5. Has anyone tried this?

thanks!

This is safe on some amps. Pull either the 2 inner or 2 outer output valves. Then half you cab ohm. For example if you are running a 16 ohm cab, use the 8 ohm speaker output. This will drop the output to half (50w).

Thanks, Damn! I didn't even think about cab ohms etc. Specifically on the VH4 it has two fuses on the back. I want to just pull one of them, rather than pulling the valves themselves.

Don't to it, nor that you'll damage the amp but because you'll lose the headroom.
VH4 can play low too. Just decrease the channel volume and then increase a bit the master volume ;)

Just pull the outer valves

I wouldn't do it. I bought my VH4 used off ebay, and after picking it up and playing it for a bit, I realized one of the tube fault lights was on. Having read previously that the amp just takes the faulty pair of tubes out of the signal, I thought "great, the amp is now half power, so I can crank the power section a bit more!" However, after realizing it was simply a blown fuse and not one of the tubes, I replaced the fuse and the amp sounded much, much better at full power (with the volume turned down a tad). The volume controls are very good on the amp, so don't worry
