Hey guys. I'm a new to rig-talk.

I've a Diezel VH4 and I was just wondering what preamp tubes you guys would recommend. I had a bunch of the Ruby Chinese 12AX7s in the preamp section and a bunch went microphonic on me for some reason.
I'm not sure how the tube positions relate tonewise so it would be a big help if someone could recommend tubes in relationship to placement.

I had to put some EHX 12AX7s in to replace the tubes that went microphonic. I put them in V2-V4. I still have a Chinese 12AX7 in V1. I think the EHX sound a tad more open with slightly less gain to them. I like this for Channel 3 but Channel 2 lacks some thickness it had with the Chinese tubes.

So if I break it down by channel i'd like to try and accomplish this (I'm using the Chinese preamp tubes as reference):

Channel 1 - slightly fuller sounding clean tone
Channel 2 - fuller slightly crunchier
Channel 3- less compressed and more open - same gain
Channel 4 - more open with slightly less gain and compression

I'm running Winged C EL34s in the power section which i really like.

Any recommendations? I'm using mainly humbucker equipped guitars with a VHT 4x12 loaded with V30s.

Thanks!

Hey
Looks like you're in the same boat as me...

That's weird. Here is the tube chart from your thread:

Here's the tube chart from Rich @ Salwender
V1 - all channels
V2 - ch 3
V3 - ch 2,3,4
V4 - all channels
V5 - mixer and send buffer
V6 - return driver
V7 - phase inverter

This is the one from the diezel website:
V1 Used by all channels
V2 Used by channel 4
V3 Used by channel 2/3/4
V4 Used by all channels
V5 Mixer and Send buffer
V6 Return driver
V7 Phase Inverter

I wonder which is correct? I'm assuming the website.

Incidently I have a 12AT7 that I could put in V2, but I think I need to replace the other tubes as well. Some of the Chinese 12AX7s have gone microphonic. I think I prefer the Chinese 12AX7 in V1, but I wonder if there is something else with similar gain/tone but lower noise.

Dude! Thanks for the tube chart! Problem solved!!! YAY! Put a 12AT7 in V3.. not v2 or v1... IT SOUNDS TIGHT AND WICKED!

Try a NOS Mullard 12AX or AT7 in V-1, or a NOS Telefunken, or RFT (same type).

The older tubes actually sound far superior to the new stuff. You will be surprised how much different and better your amp sounds.

I did that to my VH4, and now my Herbert and Einstein as well.

Also, put a 12AT7 in the phase inverter slot.
