While having alittle jam session with my buddy keith (dimebag11 here on the forums), I got the bright idea to try this. He had a 5150 (well, a 6534, but same preamp) and I had my UL. We ran the poweramp of the UL with the 5150's preamp, and I was BLOWN AWAY! It sounded ridiculous. It was like a blanket was taken off the 5150's preamp. Was ran through a Deliverance 4x12. I HIGHLY reccomend anyone to try this if they have the ability to. It almost makes me want to sell my UL, and get a GP3, a 5150, and a VHT 2/90/2 or 2150 and run this rig!!! It was MUCH clearer, much tighter, better bass response, and just an all around better tone. It was probably one of the most brutal 5150 tones I have ever heard as well

Just thought I'd share!

No interest huh? Quick questions for you guys.

While running the UL's power amp with the 5150's preamp, I noticed something strange that I couldn't understand. I assumed that the only tone controls that would work would have been the gain, bass, treb, and mid on the 5150, with the res and presence and volume controls not working, as it was just the preamp I was using from the 5150. I was under the impression that the Res, presence, and Post volume controls are connected to the power amp section of the 5150. However, the res, presence, AND volume controls all worked, as well as the tone controls. So basically, I had to juggle the volume between the VHT's Master volume, as well as the 5150. Why was this the case?

I did kind of the same thing, but a little different. I ran the power section of a JCM 800 into
A Mesa quad preamp and the walls came down,so I kinda know what you mean. I have yet
To try a 5150,but looking forwad to it,and mixing amps and preamps up.

This sounds pretty amazing.

I also thought the res and pres controls were power amp controls...

IT IS absolutely amazing. Keith/ Dimebag11 will get on here and tell you guys as well ;) and yes, I really would like someone to answer my questions about that issue, hopefully someone has some insight? :scared:

Again, I really may be selling my delivance 120 head, and getting a 5150 and VHT 2902 to run in stereo with my UL...It really was THAT sick. Yes it sounds better than a biased 5150, or a 5150 with kt88's, or modded blah blah blah...It's the VHT's power section that makes it shine, period.

As far as clips, I will try and get some up, but won't be till later this week ,or possibly next.

If you want the 5150 preamp, get a peavey rock master. Same basic preamp

I will admit it sounded pretty TITS :) It sounded WAY better than just going through the 6534+ head alone.

5150 resonance and presence are technically after the effects loop but before the PI. depending on whether using effects send/return or preamp out will depend on whether the res/pres works with the preamp signal or not.

I have done this before with an SLO. sounded pretty tits, but a 5150's poweramp is no joke either. All depends on bias and the tubes.

Right, maybe the Fiddy One Fiddy really craves KT88's ?!?!
I can, and will try Mr. V's experiment...(although my UL has 6L6s)
But, aside from the actual glass, poweramp design likely has A LOT to do with the results here.

That is partially correct. Transformer design, rectification, parts used, the glass and bias capabilities all play a part here. The 5150 power amp side was designed by James Brown and is actually more theoretically "by the book" correct. I have old GE AM/FM design manuals dating back to the 1950's that design around stability and the 5150 takes alot of those careful steps other manufacturers skip. Technically speaking the 5150 III, 5150 II, 5150 EVH, SLO, Cobra, and Dual Rec's all share very similar power-tube-specific designs where the major differences occur from the filter stages back, which is where the major tonal differences begin to occur.
