A friend just gave me a old MXR 10 band eq. What's the scoop on these? It looks just like this pic.

Not a clue about the older ones. But I am a firm believer in the modern pedal versions. I use a KFK version up front as a clean boost.

Great pedal. Shape the EQ curve into a frown shape with the mids boosted and slam the front of a Super Lead and there's your "modded" Marshall right there. Sure it's noisy, but tone is tone.

Mine doesn't have a level control so it's not slamming the front end of my amp although I'm getting some boost from the eq. I'm using mine in a true bypass loop so I can switch it on and off.

You cant get the pedal to sound the same in the loop. To drive the preamp , it needs to be inline from your guitar to the input. Totally different sound running it this way, and as Chub stated, can really give you a Modded sound when run into an older Marshall.

I'm using it with a true bypass box not in the loop of the amp. It's going into the front end of my amp but now I have the option of turning it on and off. Make sense?

Yep, you gotta take it out of the loop and slap that bad boy in front  I have a 6 band just like it, only thing that sucks is you can't turn it on or off. They're great EQs though, if you don't like it it shouldn't be hard to get rid of

EDIT: Last post wasn't there when I started typing this all out

OK,,,,,yeah, true bypass loop in front. If you boost the mids, it should really drive your pre hard. My six band works that way anyhow. It is noisy as hell though, and no on off sucks, but you got that licked with the loop.

I'm no VH expert but with the frown eq it sounds like Eddie's lead tone. I wonder if Eddie used a eq to boost his solo.

I have a Old Boss GE-10 and love it for a VH vibe with my Splawn set to a slight Plexi/JMP crunch i leave it on all the time

I have the old blue 6 and 10 band EQs. They're both nice for driving the front of an amp, but I actually prefer the 6 band. The 10 is the noisiest thing I've ever plugged between my guitar and amp (not that the 6 is much better   ).

I think the old MXR EQ's are noiser then the old boss ge-10s.
