Here’s a little peek into my new album, West ZooOpolis, written over Marco Minneman’s gnarly 51-minute drum solo as part of the Normalizer 2 project. This is track two called “Floridy Motorbungalow” (dedicated to Ernie Ball) and it features an old vintage Ernie Ball pedal Steel taking the main melody. The two guitars playing the bossa chords are a Goodall concert steel and an Otto Vowinkel spruce. Bassist is my buddy, Kevin Freeby across the whole album on a gazillion dollar Fodera.

All the composers’ versions are slated to be released together in a group package on the Abstract Logix label first quarter of 2009. This will include Trey Gunn, Mike Keneally, Alex Machacek, Marco and I. After that, there will be individual releases. So, until then, I’m just writing new HWM material and sittin on this puppy. Hope you like the tune.

The 20 tracks that comprise my mostly through-composed CD are as follows:

Part I
1 Bordertowns [00:00.000]
2 Floridy Mortorbungalow [3:27.243]
3 Eurorobot This Is Houston [5:16.609]
4 Three Trains to Tennessee [7.34.217]

Part II
5 Animal Dreams [13:15.120]
6 Midget Magi and the Bearded Hippo [14:12.973]
7 Inspector Iguana [16:21.165]
8 Elephant Emergency [19.30.133]

Part III
9 Viking Rats [22.57.733]
10 Mayor Ass [26:04.520]
11 Where Time Was [29:11:566]
12 Scratchin’ with the Turkeys [29:58.106]
13 Disposable Music [31:56.941]
14 Billy Goat Rope [34:46.434]
15 Before Your Time [37:41.602]

Part IV
16 West ZooOpolis [38.42.097]
17 Chupalupracabra [43:58.489]
18 The Blood and the Ric'lick’shun [47:06.860]
19 Three Little Lambs [48:06.321]
20 Goodnight Gorilla (Ting Tong Ting) [49:17.130]

Nice sounds John. Which module?

I just wanted to say that I really love the concept of the release. The fact that several great musical minds have a chance to give life to this percussive master piece is so cool. I hope I get a chance to hear all of them, but that depends on the price for the whole package. None the less I will certainly be buying your version.

Hey, have always played steel or did you just wood shed on it for this project and ramp it up for the recording?

From the the topic subject, I'm guessin the T/D.

Thanks guys, thought it would be funny to post something tasteful for a change. :) I like how the Egnater T/D pre in a cranked MOD 50 worked on my pedal steel with some Fulltone CF2 and light mod delay from Axe FX.

Sorry, I missed your question...I was going in three directions at once this morning. I had always admired the pedal steel from afar and scored this old 10 string EB on the bay two years ago, so I guess I just boned up on it here. Every guitarist who knows some chord theory and has patience with mechanical things should be able to get some pleasant sounds out of them after a while. I used it on over half this album!

So you are using a ten string? Single pedal? How is it tuned? (PM me if you don't want to drag your thread down) I ask becasue I am probably going to be working with a Texas Country Rock Band deal pretty soon. His name is Tom Gillam (http://www.tomgillam.com). Check him out GREAT singer and a great songwriter and most importantly to me an excellent lyricist. I can do country rock if the subject matter isn't poontang, beer, fishing and pick up trucks (not that there's anything wrong with all that  ). I will be doing his gigs south of Austin, which would be my town, New Braunfels, San Marcos, San Antonio etc. Just curious about how to work some pedal steel in. I know I can as I am a very intuitive player. I can pick up a mandolin, or whatever if it has strings and be getting something out of in about 2 or 3 minutes.

Again, great song and I know we are all looking forward to your new release(s).

Old 3-pedal Ernie Ball10 string they stopped making long ago. I tried to get it as close as I could to Nashville C6th as possible, but some of the tuners are done busted, so I had to improvise. Same with the pedals and knee levers. :)

What a great opportunity with that band! You know, I think the stigma associated with country music is quite frankly generated by either people who have no idea of how talented the typical Nashville cat is, or they are a jazz snob who hates everything, from folk to metal, to help elevate their beloved sacred language on an ever higher pedestal, or the dismissal is entirely cultural/socio-economic.

You'll have a blast hitting the B'Man or Twin with your steel. I ran it steel-volume pedal-Keely comp-T/D-MOD50-cab-mic-DAW-Fulltone CF2-Axe FX verb/delay for these.

Thanks, John I totally agree. There is some really good stuff out there, some of it flat out rocks! Tom Gillam is particularly great IMO. If you don't mind continuing the conversation, do you know enough to recommend a pedal steel, something simple to learn on? Is the C6th the primary and most useful tuning?

As a rule, I never let my lack of knowledge stand in the way of posting. The internet is all about a fantasy world, right? :D But seriously, I don't know diddly about steels. I'm thinking given your prime location, you could probably find a shop featuring or even dedicated to steels down there with the folks who really know their shit. I just scored this old thing on the bay for cheap, and to my horror, a significant number of pedals and tuners were kaput! There are a few different tunings, but I think Nashville chromatic and C6th are the most common.

Good idea. I think Steven Fulton up at Austin Vintage has few. I'll have to stop by and ask him sometime.

Thanks!!!
