I have s bad spyware situation on my computer. Have been running the Verizon security (have FIOS), but apparently it didn't stop it.

After realizing I have the mess, I bought spyware doctor on the reccomendation of a friend and it seems to have cleared most, but there is still a message that pops up regularly saying I have spyware and my computer is acting strange.

I am running windows xp

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

try booting your computer in safe mode and then run the scan.

1st thing did you boot your PC into SAFE MODE (hold down F8 on start up) before you ran your spy-sweeper ??

Do a system restore to the last known "good" date - (start menu-all programs - accessories - system tool - SYSTEM RESTORE)

might take care of it

if not start looking for suspisous *.exe's when your in *safe mode*

G-luck

Spybot + avast = impenetrable. I wouldn't trust any ISP security program, and I would never pay for one

Ad Aware and PC Tools Spyware Doctor are good, and both offer free versions.

Thanks for the help guys.

I started up in safe mode before going to bed and ran both spyware doctor and the FIOS virus scan over night.

My wife got on the computer before I got up and said there were a bunch of viruses and spyware that she deleted then she tried to restart the computer (not real sure what she did) but it wouldn't start....kept going to a blue screen.

I have tried several times starting in regular and safe mode.

I end up at one of 2 screens:

STOP:c000021a (Fatal System Error)
The session manager initialization system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of (0xc0000000 0x00000000)
The System has been shut down

or

A problem has been detected and windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

If this is the first time you've seen this stop error screen, restart your computer. If this screen apears again follow these steps:

Check to make sure any new hardware or software is properly installed. If this is a new installation, ask your hardware or software manufacturer for any windows updates you might need.

If problems continue, disable or remove any newly installed hardware or software. Disable BIOS memory options such as cashing or shodowing. If you need to use safe mode to remove or disable components, restart your computer, press F* to select Advanced Startup Options, and then select safe mode.

Technical information:

***STOP: 0x000000A (0xBAD0B194, 0x000000002, 0x000000001, 0x806FFA16)

I have not installed any new hardware or software in the last couple months.

I'm typing this from my work laptop.

I was planning to try a system restore, but am not sure how to get there from the screens I am getting....or even if I should dso that.

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

I also just noticed that between the safe mode start up screen and the blue screen with one of the above messages, a screen pops up that says:

Autochk program not found

No idea what that means either. :aww:

Sounds like some core files were infected and your wife deleted them. You are probably looking at a restore (if you backup) or reinstall of XP at this point.

I have an external harddrive that backs up once per week, but have no clue how to get what's on it onto my computer

unless you made a start-up disk, you'll need to find a windows XP disk.

put it in the cd drive and let it startup windows for you

at that point try going into safe mode and as before, do a system restore (not system recover !) to a previous date (and hopefully to a date well before the problem occured !) while in safe mode.

either way though, even if you do get your harddrive up and running again, I'd suggest wiping it clean - ie format and re-installing XP.

cause sounds like you gotta a few viruses going on there !!

I gave up...I am just gonna have a local guy I used in th epast fix the whole mess next week.
