Well since I had the day off today, I went speaker swapping!! This posting is for those who might have or have not heard of a new company called Warehouse Speakers. Jeff and the guys rave over their Vintage clone, so I thought I'd try em out. Well, since I have a bad case of G.A.S., I thought I would try out quite a few speakers!

2 Warehouse Speakers Alnico Black and Blues
2 Warehouse Speakers CL-80 clones
2 Warehouse Speakers Vintage 30 clones
I started with the CL-80's in my closed back amp. They sounded great, but a little too dark for my taste. They have GREAT midrange, and are very buttery sounding. I can see someone doing classic rock loving them as they just sit right into the mix. They are very punchy and are very tight on low end, but it felt as if there was a blanket over the speakers. They were just too dark for me. Might sound better in an open back cab for me, but I just didn't care for them
Next, I put the Vintage 30 clones in my open back 2x12 to start. They sounded "ok" there. Still chimey and good low end, but they didn't "do it for me" in a open back. Then I moved them to my closed back 2x12, and man do they sound awesome there. Being a Vintage 30 "hater" in the past, I was curious how they would match up w/ my 4x12 Marshall w/ G12T75's, and they really sounded great. Awesome midrange growl, VERY punchy low end, and just the right amount of high end sparkle. Compared to a normal celestion vintage 30, Warehouse speakers did a great job of reproducing them without that annoying upper mid range bump. That particular frequency was what I hated w/ normal Vintage 30's, but the WHS Vintage 30's sound amazing. They will definitely be staying in my closed back 2x12, replacing the G12T75s that were previously the mainstay in my closed back 2x12.
Then, I put the Alnico blues in the open back 2x12, and was I in for it!! Turned on the amp, and had it set to play through the T/D slightly compressed w/ a lil chorus verb and delay. Wow, can you say chimey, and beautiful. I have never heard my clean tone come to life like that. Add a tube screamer, and i had killer blues tone. Then I tried the VX module, and my jaw hit the floor even harder. Wow, that is THE AC30 tone I've been looking for. Then I changed to Channel B on the VX, and wow....I just couldn't get enough of that sound! I tried all modules with the Open back and they all sounded equally good (T/D, VX, SL2, and EG5).
So the next step was to try the closed back and open back together. I put the open back on top of my closed back 2x12, and put channel A's speaker output to the left alnico and vintage 30, and channel B's speaker outputs to the right alnico and vintage 30. Cranked it up a little bit, and all I can say is it was beauty to my ears. It was quite a unique tone. Very punchy, very mid rangey with a tone of bite and growl, thunderous low end, yet still maintaining that chime. I would not use that setup for everything, but it will be something I use for recording from time to time. Especially for the clean and sightly overdriven tones. The notes were just ringing out more than ever before, mainly due to the alnico blues.
Compared that whole setup to my Marshall G12T75s, which still sound awesome but different. The T75's in a 4x12 have a bit more aggressive tone which i still like . I definitely feel as if I have ended my speaker quest. I am in tone heaven!!!! I just need my Mod 50 to go along with it all .
My next thing to try once I get the mod 50 is to take one of the isolated outs from my axess electronics bs2 to a volume pedal w/ the VX module in the mod 50 running through the alnicos to add more depth to my live sound when doing complex chording w/ the eg5 and sl2. it would be similar to what dean deleo does live. adds in an ac30 to add some chime to his tone. that, and being able to add in the bassman or vx while using the td in my m4 would be killer.
any other suggestions????
i'll post pics and clips for sound purposes soon. but i'm happy in eggieland
Jeff, just hurry up and send my mod50...and i'll be in eggieheaven
