Well I haven't gigged the 20th Shiva in few months so it really hasn't moved from my studio. I did the EL34 conversion everyone raved about and didn't really dig it. Was kinda muddy at high volumes but sounded great and lower volumes. Anyway so I switched back the mod to KT88's and bias'd it up to Bogners specs, think around 33-36ma. I was going to sell the amp cause my Quick Rod was killin it in the band. We play mostly old hard rock and some metal.
Well I went and jammed with another band that played classic and hard rock along with blues and all types of styles. Brought the 20th Sheevs and the Splawn along with (just wanted to see what sounded best). Well the Shiva just KILLED the Splawn. The 20th had guts, girth, BIG balls, articulation and just really versatile. I mean it sounded amazing. The Splawn has ok but has a kinda staleness and didn't have NEAR the clarity the Bogner had. Even with the mode switch engaged it could get just as good of a metal tone as the Splawn.
In my sound panel proofed studio, an amp can sound lifeless and dull, but out in the open and in a band mix the Shiva kills. So maybe it's cause I bias'd it a little hotter and switched back to KT88's, but never judge an amp in just one room or even on one certian stage, amps sound VERY different in different rooms and positions. So long like the Shiva cause that's the happiest I've been in a very long time with my tone.
