When chugging low notes on my VH-4 my cabinet makes a sound similar to flicking an empty wine glass... kind of like a "PING" any thoughts as to what it might be? GOnna open her up today and take a look inside...

Mine does that sometimes as well. It's the tubes rattling or another component rattling. It could also be microphonics even though the tubes are good.

Take the head off the cab and put it somewhere else and see if it still does it. If it no longer makes that noise, then you know it's from sympathetic vibrations. It could also be coming from the cabinet...

EDIT: Knew it!

depth on 5 o'clock and amp beside a cupboard with wine glasses?

never heard this sound/noise issue with my vh4... would also try the separation of head and cabinet first.

I'm a pretty good troubleshooter, already tried the head being separate from the cab, still does it, strange that it does it with ALL different pre AND power tubes, but it does sound like a tube rattling, like I said it REALLY isn't a huge deal, I'm just so anal about my gear that it bugs me, I'll figure something out, hopefully MARK2C will chime in, he's the man, but thanks for the help so far guys, always appreciated!!!

Oh and FourT6... I put EL34's back in my head to test to see if it was the 6550's (it wasn't) but DAMN it just reminded me how amazing 6550's are bro, you HAVE to give it a shot... cheers!

you could also try some of those tube dampeners that the hi fi tube snobs use.

they are basically silicone rings that fit around the tubes.

i would start with the first few pre amp tubes and see if this works.

another thing you can try, is just tap the tubes with a pencil, to see if you can source out the culprit tube or tubes.

Most likely a preamp tube. Try tapping the chassis near the V1 and see if you can hear it loud and clear.
The pencil is a great tool for finding the culprit. I had a bad V1 and you could actually hear your hand running across
the chassis.

As said previously I have swapped all the tubes, literally every one of them, gonna check the cabinet tonight, hey Mark did you get my PM about those tubes? I never heard back from you... cheers man.

So it's my cabinet... I'm really happy to find out it's not my VH-4, but now I'm pissed my Mills cabinet is making weird noises LoL, that's a much easier fix then shipping off a head though, anyone have any ideas what it could be that would make a noise like that in a cab?

lol, I kinda figured it would be the cabinet (check my post!). Just tighten up every little screw you can find on it. Open it up first and tighten down all the screws inside. Sometimes there might be a washer or something loose that vibrates a little bit, especially on the rear input/output panel.

Would You like to edit the headline of Your thread ?

Gotta say Papa... I pounded on both the brand new Herbert that I'm selling, AND my VH-4 last night... and I have to personally thank you for the VH-4... it is an unbelievable piece of equipment... I know you said you aren't liking the 6550's in the amps anymore, but it is my opinion that no VH-4 should have ANYTHING other then 6550's in them, thank you for such an incredible piece of gear, I've never felt so confident on stage as I do now with the "V" behind me!!

You know, it's ironic that this would happen to a Mills cabinet, a builder that likes to stop by at Diezel forum to trash talk Diezel cabinets. If it weren't Mizati20, I'd think it's Peter's friend. I'm just saying.

PS: I'd open up the cabinet & tighten screws holding the speakers.

I didn't know the Mills guys do that, what fucking tools, I'm not a Mills fanboi like I am a Diezel fanboi, I got my Mills cab in a trade, and although I love it, I think it sucks they would come to the Diezel forum with bad intentions, and I also think it sucks that the cab isn't even a year old and is starting to give me problems... I will post results this afternoon after I pick up my son and get a chance to get my hands dirty...

I think Dave Mills was taking offense to the fact the Terry Hicks basically said the new Diezel cabs were the best cabs on the planet and nothing could touch them. He way over-hyped those cabs and suckered some into spending $1,800 on a cab. He wasn't trash talking the cabinet itself. How could he. He has never played one. He was disputing Terry's claims - and offered to put his cab side-by-side with a Diezel cab. Terry was obviously an upstanding/trustworthy person - so I can't understand why Dave Mills just didn't accept whatever Terry said.

Mizati - just call Dave to see if you could diagnose the problem. Maybe its a bad speaker or a connection came loose.

I'm sorry man, but with all due respect he went far beyond that & I can't rationalize his behavior with that. There are a large number of pizza places in Chicago & most of them claim that they have the best pizza, I don't see anything wrong with that. I was actually about to order a 2x12 myself, until I saw some of his posting. I resent any marketing that is based on bashing competitors products or prices, especially in the sarcastic manner he chose.
