Well This Was A Surprise...

I got the EG3/4 today that I traded my E-rect for with rudomat. It's probably my favorite module now. Even more so than the MHG. It's very smooth and I like that. Next to it, my MHG is probably darker but has more hair. If I could smooth the MHG out and make it more like the 3/4 but darker, that'd be 2 great sounds.

At first the mid knob didn't respond correctly though. It was erratic and increasing it actually seemed to drop the overall level. But turning it from min to max several times seems to have corrected the issue. I imagine it may be dirty. Now it's working fine.

I noticed that the C2 cap is not orange but brownish. Is that stock? It's stamped "CDM 1000 +- 5%".

Also, I noticed that my T/D, EG5 and MHG DO NOT have C2 caps. If I added a cap to the EG5, would it smooth her out a bit? Same for the MHG.

Thanks.

This was a good, good Egnater day. Really dug both channels of EG3/4. Does that mean I'd probably like SL2?

Doubtful since SL2 is not as smooth as EG3/4.

Which cap are you referring to? Is C2 the one on the upright tube board?

Stock, on the EG3/4, it's a big brown 1000pf Silver Mica cap.

From what I understand, that capis KINDA like a master high-cut, which in turn, refocuses the midrange frequencies and smooths things out, depending on the value. but I'm sure Jeff/bruce can give a much better explanation.

Yeah, that's the one. I thought I saw a pic here of one and it was orange.

Well this is a good day...got a box of 4 modules come to my house!!! :)

GNR module, EG5 (back to stock), EG3/4 (back to stock minus the 500 pf cap change), and a Erect! :)

Can't wait to fire it up!

So is this a reversal of the Friedman mods? Could you give some back story on all of these? Also interested in "GNR" vs "HBE."

Yeah it is a reversal. After a while, Dave's mods just were not what I was looking for. He does a fine job, but I just wanted to go back to stock.

The GnR module...holy hell. That's one killer job by Jeff! Takes the SL2, tightens up the low end to be in between the SL2 / EG5. It doesn't have as much low end as a SL2, but honestly man...it's for the better. Makes it super tight and punchy! ChA really comes alive...and feels like ChB of the SL but tighter. ChB is totally GnR Appetite for Destruction tone through and through. Was jamming on Mr. Brownstone..and bam...it was there! Marshall mid-rangey raunchy tone at its best. Has more "grit" to the upper mids and highs than the SL2. Takes away some of the smoothness of the SL2 and makes it growl more. Yanked out the E34L's out of my Mod50...and tried it and the EG5 w/ the 6550s...and bam...yeah...I missed the stock EG5. That's just my tone. I liked the GNR better w/ my 6550s too. Threw the EG3/4 (with 500pf cap change) in there too..and yep...it's an amazing tone too!

So..now I'm back to all stock modules ...well...a GNR module...and a EG3/4 w/ the cap change...everything else is stock.

And I'll say..Dave is a stand up guy...who is a great guy to work with. His mods were just not for me personally. I really do like his E-rect mod a lot though. That's a cool mod.

The E-rect is my favorite heavy module.
How does Dave's mod improve upon it? How does a DF E-rect compare to a Randall Grail?

R~

I'd love to hear the answer to this too....ever since I heard DF has a mod for the Erect, my GAS has been uncontrollable for one...especially as I sold my stock Erect due to preferring the Grail :D

Lalalalalalalala...not listneing to Eric...lalalalalala(fingers in ears).

Dave,

I had my CDM 1000 +- 5 in my EG3/4 changed to a 500pf like Eric and it is great! Adds a touch of presence so you don't have to run the treble so high!

Also, I love the EG3/4 and also love the SL2! I can't decide which I like best. You may like them both!

Thanks richedie. I was hoping that question didn't get lost. :) I'm glad to know it's stock. The original owner just emailed me back and said it was stock. The deal with the mid pot acting funning doesn't happen anymore so there must have been some dust in the pot that I was able to clear by working the knob. :gay:

I played the rig again last night, late and really dig the EG3/4. All 4 mods sounded great though.

My settings may look wierd to most guys who use the Eggie stuff. It seems most guys like the treble up. I never did. Not with any amp. Except the Lonestar but that amp's treble was rolled back to start with. Same reason Timmons loves it.

For my EG3/4, last night I tweaked a bit more and ended up with Bass: 10:30, Mid: 1:00, Treble: 9:30, Master: 10:00 and Gain 2:00. On channel A I run the Gain at 3:00. In the room, it's a tone that I could call my #1 tone. Not sure how it would work in a band though. I run treble at 9:00 on the EG5 and MHG as well. But on the MHG, Bass and Mid are 1:00 while on the EG5, they're both noon. No bright or bass boost so far. I run less gain on those 2 mods than the EG3/4. Anything from noon to 1pm.

Now I'm having fun. If I have time this weekend, I'm going to break out my new Amp-Head bias tool and take a look and see how hot/cold my 2/50/2 is running. I may even throw a set of SED EL34s in there.

Dave

PS

If Dave F's E-rect mod gives it more gain and tones down the top, I may get one and have him do it. My complaint of the stock E-rect is that it just doesn't have enough gain. Doesn't remind me of a real Recto. If that's how it has to be in order to get rid of the Recto fizz, then I'd rather have the fizz.

I love the eg3/4 too! After the vx it may be my favorite  I like the darker texture than the sl2, great for rhythms and solos.
