I was told once I go to Alnico Golds I will never go back. How good are these for hard rock, etc? That much better than ceramic speakers?

Hard rock? Their greatness gets lost as the "hard" gets "metal". :-)

They are the best at accentuating that "string snap" thing. Dynamics are off the charts. Thats why Brad Paisley et al love them.

GLORIOUS in a Bluesbreaker (JTM45 Open-back combo).

I think Danny Spitz (Anthrax) has also been using them to throw down, and that's pretty hardcore... That ain't wimpy music

Alnico Golds are the best of the best man, most certainly from Celestion's house, maybe even in the Top3 worldwide - they're beautiful. But not cheap.

Good luck,
Mo

Interesting. Didn't know that.

What cones do the Golds use?

I was looking at my AG's through the grill-cloth comparing them to my V30's. The cones look the same, but I guess the cone "recipe" could be different? I get SO much bottom-end form my AG's - and they're housed in an open-back 2x12 cabinet. I can't wait to load my 4x12 with a quad of AG's... Maybe AG's and Heritage G12H30's in an X pattern?

Played a 212 with this mix and a Savage 30 watt amp and it was heavenly!!! It was the most juicy, detailed and shimmery sound I've ever heard (in person).

Ya I'm still toying with the notion of re-loading my Bogner 20thA 4x12 with AGs. Can't see it being a bad thing. Just a "do I need it" thing

Going back and forth between the VG's and the V30's - the V30's have an almost "fuzzy" sounding high-end, with "honking" sounding upper midrange - yet they both seem to operate in the same frequency range. If that makes any sense? It's like the VG does what the V30 does - only much better. Playing my AC30 in top-boost mode with the VG's is truly an experience. I plugged a Sabbadius "Funky Vibe" into the AC30, and I literally started feeling sea sick!

Celestion Alnico Golds are like Blues with a higher power rating. I dig blues in my Vox amps.

If you can find Celestion G12 Century Neos (not Century Vintage), worth a look. Not well known, and they have been discontinued, (I have a pair, NIB, not for sale), but are light weight, loud and very clear which is why I hunted these down for months, not easy to find (I called Celestion, who told me they were discontinued, then started calling dealers in North America...) and they were not cheap, around $220 each!). I plan to use them in a 2x12 cab at some point, but other projects got in the way...

Were those the speakers that had a star (UFO) type housing on the back?

I've seen various manufacturers make these style of speakers - but have NEVER experienced one whatsoever. I'm keeping my distance out of fear and ignorance.

Common complaint. They may operate within the same "range" but where they peak and deliver is quite different speaker to speaker. Check out the frequency charts to see these variations:

You can see that the Alnico's exhibit high-end roll-off vs. the V30's highs remaining peaked at 80db/20k. That's what I've never liked about the V30 drivers. Mixing an AG with a Heritage G12H or even a G12M would be a good pairing of drivers.

I have V30 and a Gold in my 2x12.
I think it is a killer combination- you get the chime of the Gold and the throaty/gnarly weight of the V30 at the same time.
