...When you hear this?

I have no idea what was used when this was recorded, but I really dig this tone. For some reason, my mind jumps to a cranked Vox AC30 with a drive pedal out front. Not really sure why, but I want whatever it takes to get that tone.

They are very AC/DC. Sounds more Marshall to me. They play Satellite amps.

I saw the info on the Satellite Amps, but thought that might have been more recent.

Thats definitely possible. I think it was a 66 Bassman but it doesn't sound like it in the video you posted. It is a cool tone.

Marshall or Vox.

Playing through a Marshall here... Pinnacle wood-knocking rock tone!

Reminds me of this...

Doesn't look like a Marshall on the Marshall cab. Look closer. Loks like a Satellite.

I think you're right. Satellite "Atom" = AC30 circuit! :)

If the things I've read (and others have posted) are accurate, the recent stuff is probably played through a Satellite Amp of some sort. One of the tidbits I found on the web mentioned something about an old Mesa amp being a favorite back in the old days until it imploded and a loaned Satellite amp saved the day. The Satellite won out from that point.

I still wonder what was used for the "Beat To Death Like A Dog" recording. It sounds AC30ish to me - but pretty much everyone on this forum has better ears than I do

Whatever it is, I'd like to be able to dial in that tone. I could work with that...

Just hit me.... the riff is based on "What's next to the moon".
Definitely similar notes/chords with a different cadence. Hadn't heard that song in years - almost completely forgot about it...

It sounds like it has more hair than an AC30. I have had five of those. I don't hear the thicker creamier mids present in an AC30 but I think the Atom is based on an AC30 circuit. I read about the Mesa blowing up   He mentions his Bassman a lot but that doesn't sound like a Fender. In live feeds I see the Satellite on stage in 2007. In 2010 I see Marshals. Who knows what they used in this recording. If I had to guess I would guess a Marshal. You can always try and ask Brian

1964 Fender Vibrolux Reverb
1965 Fender Bassman (head)
1966 Fender Bassman (head)
1966 Fender Bassman (head, yes I bought another one)
1967 VOX Buckingham 35 watt Solid State (head)
1972 Marshall 50w Super Lead (head)
1976 Marshall 100w Super Lead (head)
1990s Marshall JCM 900 4100 High Gain Dual Reverb 100 Watt (head)
1981 Mesa Boogie Mark IIB 100w (head)
1984 Mesa Boogie Mark IIC 100w (head)
Satellite Atom 36 watt (head)
1990 Peavey Classic 50 2×12 combo
Peavey Studio Pro 50
SPEAKER CABINETS

Five AC30's?  Buy and flip, or buy and keep? I've always wanted one, but have never pulled the trigger.

Buy and flip or sent back. I kept the new Handwired for awhile which I liked quite a bit. Nice amp. You should check one out.

It's on the list.

But so is the Helios

You need to push the AC30 to get the goods, and it's one loud mother! You may want to consider an AC15, GDS 18, or wait for the Guytron GT25 to be released.

If you go with an AC30, consider a head version with a good quality oversized 2x12 cabinet. The standard size vintage reissue Vox cabinet from North Coast looks nice, but not so great in the tone dept. I A/B'd a North Coast vintage reissue Vox 2x12 against my oversized 2x12 Cornford pine = no contest. A pine cabinet will exploit consonance and dissonance like no other, but you may need to "tune" the level of resonation with Acoust-X or other interior coating. If you don't want to mess with that, go with a good quality oversized or standard size 2x12 birch with a deeper pocket. I prefer Bogner and Guytron. Use Celestion Alnico Blue speakers or Alnico Gold for the same, with a tighter bottom-end.

GDS 18

Guytron GT25 prototype

Here's an AC15 vs AC30 demo... I prefer the AC15 circuit.
