went from el34's to 6l6's???
i am taking it to jerry P next week to get darkened up and to turn the cactus channel into a bone grinding flesh peeling channel. fuck the other channels. he said the trick is to keep all the 5 modes sounding good. My answer was fuck those other modes. its just a single channel head with a 5-way tone shifter anyways so screw the other tones, i only need one.

I just changed from EL34 to harma 6L6's in my laney GH50l.

Its night and day man, sounds hugerm ballsier, and seems a bit clearer but that could be down to the APC pickups i just put in.

6L6 will sound rounder, more bass heavy, and won't have the mid-grind that the EL34s have.

So why not but a VTM or a Butcher cheap and have Jerry "Grind" it up and sell the penta and have some extra cash for other things? Or keep the penta.

The VTM's and Butchers sell really cheap. I love my Butcher....It's a SCREAMER since I modded it.

If you only want one channel this would be the better way to go. Butcher's and VTM's are going up in price but can still be found cheap. Or even a windsor. The clips Jerry posted were not high gain clips but I think he said he could voice the am that way. Just some thoughts. Selling the penta would cover the amp plus mods.

the thing with the penta is, i worked out a trade for some other gear with a friend of mine. so cash wise i would only say i have about $600 into the penta. i had it on e-gay for $825 twice. with over $500 of mods and the custom grille, worth around $200. and there were brand new pentas(stock) that people wanted $1000 for. it didnt sell. for me to "feel" its worth selling i would need $800 out of it. i could dump it for $600 sure. but i cant replace it with a 5150 or 6505 for $600.
i am one who is more concerned with a player amp that does what i need it to do. not worried if what i am about to do hurts the re-sale. i am going to have it re-tolexed in that red scaley skin pattern also. or possibly a standard burgangy-ish. its pretty much going to tide me over till i can spring for an uber.
